iPad Air 2 reportedly out in October, but without a new iPad Mini alongside

Report claims that Apple’s next small tablet won’t launch until early 2015

Apple has long been expected to debut a new version of the iPad Air this autumn, with a new iPad Mini expected right alongside it. However, a new report claims the latter won’t be the case.

According to Taiwan’s Commercial Times, the so-called iPad Air 2 will indeed launch in October, with production ramping up now. The tablet is expected to feature the iPhone 6‘s A8 processor, along with its M8 motion coprocessor and Touch ID fingerprint sensor – both firsts for the iPad.

However, that same report says that Apple will hold off on releasing the latest version of the iPad Mini, which gained a Retina display this time last year while offering similar specs as the iPad Air. Perhaps Apple wants more time to differentiate the smaller iPad from the new iPhone 6 Plus?

No clear reason is provided why it might launch later than expected, but if the report proves correct, the new iPad Mini will come out in the first quarter of 2015, which is around the time that the Apple Watch is expected out, as well.

And if you’re holding out for the iPad Pro, the purported 12.9in tablet rumoured for years, the Commercial Times claims that it will go into production in Q2 2015, meaning it’ll still be several months before such a device hits consumers.
