Strumify isn't the first music tutorial app to use your iPhone's mic to pick up and give you feedback on your strumming abilities but the trick is still impressive. Couple that with support for guitar, ukelele and mandolin, rolling graphics and the ability to import and slow down songs and this free app's on to a winner.

With more than a small nod to melancholic 70s sci-fi flicks – more Solaris than Star Wars – Waking Mars is a slow-paced, space cavern discovery game in which you must take charge of the future planet's fragile ecosystem. All this and it looks beautiful. Don't drop the exotic plant now.

Rechner Calculator 69p

The humble calculator gets an Apple makeover with this swipe-tastic new app that replaces +, -, = and clear icons with touchscreen gestures and hides everything else away out of sight. It'll probably take a minute or two to get used to but after that, devs aeliox reckon the app will speed up your calculations by 200%. Numbers always convince us.

Our pals over at What Hi-Fi? have launched their world class mag on iPhone and iPad this week. For £35 a year you can get expert home cinema news, reviews and guides delivered to your iDevice every month – we wouldn't read tests by anyone else.

Sparrow £1.99

This nice looking email client has pane navigation, mugshots next to your contacts, thread view and the ability to attach photos once you're in the message. One niggle: to get push notifications you'll need a jailbroken iPhone and the corresponding Sparrow tweak, because Apple isn't budging for now.
