Apple's iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 launch event is scheduled for 22 October

…which coincides with a Nokia showcase and Microsoft’s Surface 2 debut in the US. Now that's killing two birds with one stone

Good old Apple, always ready to issue a not-so-subtle sales challenge to its competitors.

According to AllThingsD (which tends to get these things right), Apple has scheduled its highly anticipated keynote for the iPad line on 22 October. Coincidentally, that’s the same day Nokia holds its Innovation Reinvented showcase and Microsoft Surface 2 goes on sale in the US. You might say Apple is killing two birds with one stone. Or maybe, it's just one bird, since Nokia and Microsoft are kind of in bed with each other after the acquisition.

The new Apple gadgets expected on 22 October include the iPad Mini 2 and the iPad 5. We also have our fingers crossed for a never-seen-before super-sized iPad sub-species. Fortunately, the tablets won’t be hogging the limelight; the Mac line and OS X Mavericks are rumoured to get some precious airtime too.

iFanatics, remember to draw a big red heart, or perhaps an apple, on your calendar. We'll be back to confirm the event when we receive an actual, real-life invitation in our inboxes.

It would be helpful to your readers if you could not put a headline reporting a rumour as a though it was a fact. The rumour about the event has been doing the rounds, but the confirmation from Apple is what is wanted. Reading your headline makes it sound like Apple has now confirmed the date, but instead it is still the old rumour. The headline may get me to look at the article, but in doing so it is just wasting my time.
