Leaked LG G4 screenshot reveals a pixel-packed 3K screen

Nope. That's not a typo. 624 pixels per inch, here we come

Well well. Things just got even more interesting in the 2015 superphone spec race.

A leaked screenshot reportedly taken from an LG G4 (picked up by My LG) shows off a 2880 x 1620 screen resolution. Which could also be described as 3K.

Previous rumours have suggested that the LG G4 will land with a slightly smaller 5.3in display. If that turns out to be true, then we’re looking at a smartphone screen that’s pumping out 624 pixels per inch.

That’s nearly twice as much as Apple’s 326ppi Retina Display baseline, and it’ll shoot the G4 straight to the top of list when it comes to screen specs. Even if the rumours are wrong, and the G4 retains a 5.5in screen, we’re still looking at a healthy 602ppi count.

Whether or not that extra sharpness will make any real difference in regular use however, is a different question entirely.

In day-to-day use, you’ll be hard pressed to notice the difference between a 2K screen and a 1080p one, when held at arms length. Start comparing the two in detail however, and the sharpness can be spotted. We’ll just have to wait and see if the step up to 3K blows away our retinas with every glance, or simply impresses us under close scrutiny.

The document which leaks the screen resolution refers to a device called the LG-VS999. The VS985 is the existing model number for the US-based Verizon LG G3, so this could very well be genuine.

The G4 is also expected to land with Qualcomm’s powerful quad-core Snapdragon 810 processor and 3GB of RAM – hardware that’s already present in the LG G Flex 2. Coupled with expected camera improvements, the G4 is shaping up to be a fierce competitor in this year’s smartphone wars.

If LG can ensure that the battery life doesn’t take a hit from all of these tasty specs, then it’s got a real shot at the number one spot in Stuff’s Top 10 list.

With the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S6, Apple iPhone 6s, Sony Xperia Z4 and HTC One (M9) on the way too, this year looks set to be the most exciting one yet.
