(Ha! The joke&rsquo;s on Apple &mdash; our local pond is only three feet deep.)</p> <p>I&rsquo;ve therefore spent time of late playing a thrilling game of &lsquo;manage the back-up&rsquo;, pruning chunks of my iCloud back-ups to the point I can&rsquo;t really hack any more away without rendering them pointless. In part, this was down to sheer stubbornness, but it was also a response to Apple&rsquo;s absurdly expensive iCloud pricing, which started at a laughable &pound;14 per year for 10 GB, moseyed on through&nbsp;&pound;28 per year for&nbsp;20 GB, and went all the way up to &pound;70 annually for a frankly laughable and piffling 50 GB.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>At WWDC 2014, Apple announced it was all-change for iCloud pricing, and the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/cloud-drive/apples-icloud-just-got-cheaper/news">new tiers are live</a>. In the UK, you now get 20 GB for just under a tenner, 200 GB for &pound;36, 500 GB for &pound;84, and 1 TB for &pound;180. (Those playing close attention will wonder why 1 TB costs more than twice the price for 500 GB, but the answer is probably some combination of &lsquo;rounding errors in currency conversion&rsquo;, &lsquo;those Brits will pay it anyway&rsquo; and &lsquo;Apple lacks the scale for everyone to use 1 TB of data, so please just avoid that option &mdash; thanks&rsquo;.)</p> <p>It&rsquo;s still not enough. Apple still only gives you 5 GB of space for free. On the surface, that might compare favourably to rival services &mdash; Dropbox gives you 2 GB; OneDrive and Google Drive each offer 15. But such thinking evaporates when you realise how rapidly iCloud storage is eaten up by device back-ups. A single iPhone&rsquo;s Camera Roll can be larger than 5 GB in size, and if you&rsquo;ve multiple devices, you&rsquo;ve no chance of backing them all up.</p> <p>This is clearly a first-world problem with a whiff of entitlement about it. You might argue people should just stump up the cash. The thing is, not enough people back-up their data as it is, and Apple has a reputation for making things that&nbsp;<em>just work</em>. Right now, iCloud back-up often doesn&rsquo;t work or won&#39;t work without substantial management effort &mdash; and that isn&#39;t very Apple.</p> <p>And so people just switch it off. They&rsquo;re not prepared to pay extra after they&rsquo;ve splashed out loads of cash on a shiny new device, and certainly not when they&rsquo;ve bought two or more.&nbsp; It&rsquo;d be great for the company to recognise this shortcoming. Perhaps you could get 5 GB for every active device you own rather than just the first, or storage space could exempt back-ups. But then leaving money on the table isn&rsquo;t very Apple either.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ios-8/review" target="_blank">iOS 8 review</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iCloud" alt="iCloud" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/icloud-drive_0.jpg?1411293781" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-s-lower-icloud-prices-still-aren-t-good-enough/feature#comments Apple iCloud Fri, 19 Sep 2014 15:49:23 +0000 Craig Grannell 1447720 at http://www.stuff.tv Four new iOS 8 keyboards to introduce to your thumbs http://www.stuff.tv/apple/find-your-ios-8-type-8-third-party-keyboards-will-out-type-quicktype/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> iOS 8 users - you can now use custom third party keyboards. Given how small the keys are (to increase screen real estate), this is a very good thing.</p> <p class="p2"><a href="https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/minuum-little-keyboard-for/id914968934" target="_blank"><strong>Download Minuum from the App Store</strong></a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/niV2KCkKmRw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Fleksy (69p) </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>This clever keyboard&nbsp;broke the Guinness World Record for the fastest touchscreen message ever typed. Here&rsquo;s why:</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/craig-grannell" title="View user profile.">Craig Grannell</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <h2>1. It works with any microwave</h2> <p>You know full well if Apple was to introduce an exciting new method of charging, it would come with an exciting new charging accessory, with an exciting new price tag. You&rsquo;d be buying your Apple Hob for 50 quid, not flinging your iPhone into your microwave, next to the remains of yesterday&rsquo;s baked beans.</p> <h2>2. It wasn&#39;t unveiled at the Apple Event</h2> <p>In the unlikely scenario everyone in Cupertino got <em>really</em> drunk and actually did invent Apple Wave, it would have got at least a mention at the &nbsp;keynote. Tim Cook might have lifted a black cloth off of a microwave with a flourish, and showed the new iPhone 6 being charged in mere seconds. And then an underling could have made popcorn for everyone.</p> <h2>3. Apple&rsquo;s website doesn&rsquo;t mention it</h2> <p>Just a small point, but if you nip over to Apple&#39;s site, you&rsquo;ll discover that Apple Wave doesn&rsquo;t get a mention on the home page, iPhone page, iOS 8 page, or any other page. That&rsquo;s probably a good indication that Apple Wave isn&rsquo;t actually a real thing.</p> <h2>4. The advert does&rsquo;t look very Apple</h2> <p>The advert that&rsquo;s circulating looks like it was hacked together by someone without a great deal of understanding of how to make something Apple-like in terms of design, presumably on the basis that&rsquo;s exactly what it is. If something doesn&rsquo;t look like it was made by Apple, chances are it wasn&rsquo;t.</p> <h2>5. IT&rsquo;S ABOUT MICROWAVING YOUR PHONE</h2> <p>OK, so this is the big one. Wave is about microwaving your phone, which involves putting your phone into a microwave and <em>microwaving it</em>. Now, when we were kids, we were sternly warned not to even put a metal fork into the microwave by mistake, in case the entire house exploded, so at what point does someone think &ldquo;Hey, I think I&rsquo;ll just pop my extremely expensive new iPhone in there for a few minutes&rdquo; and reason that will be OK?</p> <p>On the plus side, we&rsquo;re pretty sure most of the images of fried iPhones on Twitter are faked, because the alternative is too horrible to contemplate.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-doomed-company-goes-days-without-launching-new-product-line/feature" target="_blank">Apple doomed as company goes for days without launching a new product line</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/apple/top-5-ways-tell-apple-wave-iphone-6-microwave-charging-fake/feature#comments Apple iPhone 6 Smartphones Fri, 19 Sep 2014 15:51:25 +0000 Craig Grannell 1448080 at http://www.stuff.tv Apple iOS 8 http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ios-8/review <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Our fingers dance all over iOS 8 to see if it&#039;s Apple&#039;s best mobile experience yet </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="800" height="600" title="Packed with colour" alt="Apple iOS 8 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/intro_0.jpg?1411134761" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/craig-grannell" title="View user profile.">Craig Grannell</a> </div> </div> </div> <p>Software has a tendency to move in cycles. One major revision will dazzle in screen grabs, and the next will make a load of changes that aren&rsquo;t immediately apparent, but could nonetheless be what revolutionise things for users. Occasionally, this approach stumbles, not least with its over-emphasis on text-only buttons that are frequently indistinct or not obviously points of action; an accessibility control to add button borders is seemingly disgusted at any possible alternative, revealing one of the ugliest pieces of interface design Apple&rsquo;s ever created.</p> <p>However, just as iOS 7&rsquo;s updates toned down the worst excesses of this radical departure from iOS&rsquo;s past, so too does this update make much-needed refinements. The best example is the subtle redesign of Control Center, which ditches spindly indistinct icons on button outlines for bolder glyphs and solid backgrounds. Usability is further enhanced by dialling down the transparency behind the content and providing a preview of how your display will look as the brightness bar is adjusted.</p> <p>Similar touches are evident throughout this update. If you hated iOS 7, iOS 8 won&rsquo;t convert you; but if aspects of it merely nagged, the changes here might be enough to stop you pining for the days of linen textures and glossy buttons.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/icheapskate-25-amazing-free-games-ipad-and-iphone/feature" target="_blank">iCheapskate: 38 amazing free games for iPad and iPhone</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1280" height="1136" title="Pretty colours" alt="Apple iOS 8 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/visuals_0_0.png?1411134761" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Extensibility </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Really, though, the most exciting aspect of any operating system is what you can do with it. To date, iOS has been locked down, making it relatively intuitive but also inflexible. People had to leap through hoops in an absurd manner to perform relatively simple tasks, such as editing a document in multiple apps, or even sharing content to a preferred service.</p> <p>With iOS 8, you get the opportunity to swap out keyboards, add widgets (sort of), massively boost sharing and inter-app communications, work with third-party filters inside Apple&rsquo;s Photos app, and use apps that work with Touch ID for fingerprint authentication.</p> <p>The last of those is a Godsend for the likes of 1Password, but also has applications elsewhere. Amazon&rsquo;s iOS app has already integrated Touch ID support, and it&rsquo;s likely to become something of a staple on supported devices, if not specifically for passwords then for two-factor validation.</p> <p>As before, Touch ID is divorced from iCloud, with your data living in obfuscated form on your device&rsquo;s A7 or A8 chip. Developers cannot access your data, because iOS does all the to-and-fro itself. In combination with a robust password system (either Apple&rsquo;s iCloud Keychain or the aforementioned 1Password), Touch ID stands to revolutionise on-device security for iOS device owners.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6/review" target="_blank">Apple iPhone 6 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1281" height="1136" title="Hunter2" alt="Apple iOS 8 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/tocuhid2_0.png?1411134761" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Keyboards in iOS 8 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Keyboards in iOS are now hot-swappable, although it&rsquo;s first worth playing around with the revamped default, which implements a system called QuickType. This heavily resembles many Android keyboards, adding three predictive words above the keyboard that you can stab at to speed things along.</p> <p>What Apple has done very well is create a keyboard that attempts to adapt not only to what you write but where you write it, offering predictions based on existing content and style. The predictions bar can be removed if you don&rsquo;t use it or feel it takes up too much screen space, although you won&rsquo;t want to. Oddly, autocorrect appeared to be less reliable in this initial build of iOS 8, though, slightly hampering any boost in typing speed.</p> <p>Alternative keyboards are installed from the App Store like any other third-party app, and awkwardly activated in the Settings app. You switch between them using the keyboard&rsquo;s globe button. The likes of SwiftKey work as you&rsquo;d expect, finally bringing crazed swipey &lsquo;typing&rsquo; to iOS; however, swappable keyboards have enabled more ambitious products to finally make sense on iOS, such as text-expansion utility TextExpander.</p> <p>Previously reliant on apps specifically supporting it, the app now gets the opportunity to work system-wide by being a keyboard. It&rsquo;s also worth noting that Apple&rsquo;s privacy stance impacts on third-party keyboards, banning them by default from internet access and disabling them when typing in secure password fields. Given concerns surrounding online security, this is an acceptable compromise.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/swiftkey-ios-revealed-best-android-keyboard-your-iphone/news" target="_blank">SwiftKey for iOS revealed</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1280" height="1136" title="SWIPING" alt="Apple iOS 8 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/keyboard_0.png?1411134761" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Widgets </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Anyone hoping Apple would upend the Home screen and enable Android-style widgets will be disappointed in iOS 8 siloing equivalents within Notifications Center. Once active, it will appear by default in the Share sheet system-wide.</p> <p>The current implementation of extensions upends how certain tasks are dealt with on iOS, even if there&rsquo;s a whopper of a bug lurking.</p> <p>The bug in question involves the custom ordering of the sharing and actions lists frequently failing to stick. Presumably, this will be dealt with in an update, and it&rsquo;s easy to forgive once you start sharing from Safari to Instapaper, unlocking apps using 1Password, uploading images from Photos to social networks, and so on.</p> <p>Actions are context-sensitive, meaning options only appear when relevant, and the system at the very least means less frustrating hopping between a bunch of apps to get things done.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/25-best-iphone-and-ipad-games-you-can-play-right-now/feature" target="_blank">The 25 best iPhone and iPad games you can play right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="900" height="675" title="We&#039;re surprised you&#039;re reading this when you could be playing Destiny right now" alt="Apple iOS 8 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ios1.jpg?1411134761" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Photos and Camera </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Photos app looks little changed, but is a very different beast from its predecessor. First, the editing tools have been significantly beefed up, in part because iPhoto for iOS has been canned. Rotation can now be arbitrary, and there&rsquo;s more control over colour and light.</p> <p>The app retains a small, reasonably impressive selection of filters, but these are now significantly boosted by third-party integrated photo extensions. When editing, compatible apps are listed via a nondescript circular button with an ellipses, and they essentially inject their capabilities directly into Photos. This means you can apply filters from the likes of Halftone 2 or VSCO Cam inside Photos, and the edits remain non-destructive.</p> <p>The other main change to Photos concerns image storage, and Apple&rsquo;s at a transitionary point regarding Photo Stream. The company&rsquo;s long-term plan is to save your entire image library in iCloud Photo Library, currently in beta. Edits will be synchronised across devices, and your library will be searchable, but the system requires you to splash out on the requisite amount of iCloud storage. At present, the old-style Photo Stream remains, although frustratingly there&rsquo;s no longer a specific album housing its images &mdash; instead, you must fish around in &lsquo;Recently Added&rsquo;.</p> <p>For taking your photos, Camera gets some minor but welcome updates: manual exposure controls, a delay timer, panoramas on iPad, and a fun time-lapse mode that stitches images together into videos. It&rsquo;s unlikely these changes will wrench anyone from high-end third-party apps, but they&rsquo;re enough to ditch the more simple Camera alternatives.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/android-45/review" target="_blank">Android L preview</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2048" height="1536" title="Filters galore" alt="Apple iOS 8 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/photos_0.png?1411134761" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Apps: Mail, Messages and more </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>There are four new permanent apps as of iOS 8: Podcasts, iBooks, Tips and Health. The first two are no different from their older App Store versions. Tips could have been useful (Apple hates manuals), but merely provides you with, on launch, nine tips (well, we did say Apple hates manuals).</p> <p>Health is a much bigger deal, serving as the hub for data provided by your iPhone, and any compatible apps and accessories. The idea is to give you a sense of how you&rsquo;re progressing with exercise and activity, but also to make it frictionless to shift between apps, rather than feeling forced to stick with one because it has your data in its silo. On launch, however, this part of iOS was broken and temporarily off-limits to third-party developers; also, iPad owners aren&rsquo;t invited to the party, even purely for accessing their data.</p> <p>Many existing apps have had minor updates. Mail has new gestures and can stash multiple drafts at the foot of the screen, or allow you to peek behind a message you&rsquo;re writing. The drafts system is a mite fiddly, but nonetheless an improvement on iOS 7; the gestural controls are entirely hidden, but great once ingrained into your muscle memory.</p> <p>Messages adds controls for muting or leaving conversations, recording audio, and rapidly adding images from your photos or camera. The new features are nice enough, but can&rsquo;t get around Messages being an Apple-only solution and also one that has a tendency to not sync correctly across devices.</p> <p>Elsewhere, Safari gets accordion-like tabs on iPad and DuckDuckGo as a search engine option; there&rsquo;s also an attempt to shift into smart-searching, using abbreviations, but it fared poorly during testing. App Store on iPhone has vertical scrolling search results on iPhone and purchased app hiding on iPad. Notes gets rich-text formatting, finally transforming it into a half-decent text editor. And Siri gets voice-activation when your device is plugged in.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="1048" title="Mail and messaging" alt="Apple iOS 8 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/messages_0.jpg?1411134761" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Spotlight </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Apple&rsquo;s system-wide search remains a bit too sluggish to be truly usable, frequently offering new search results just as you go to tap something. However, rather than pare it down in Settings to just showing apps, it&rsquo;s also worth leaving Spotlight Suggestions and Bing Web Results active as well. The two combine to turn Spotlight into a much more useful tool that provides in-context web searches.</p> <p>For example, type in the name of a band and you&rsquo;ll get a link to the artist on iTunes, an album and the Wikipedia entry. Type in an app, service or game name and you&rsquo;ll likely get the App Store link. You can also do searches for terms that will then list relevant websites or places. Although many of the results of course channel you straight to Apple&rsquo;s own store, it&rsquo;s pretty convent to type &lsquo;indian food&rsquo; into Spotlight and immediately get the name and phone number of a trio of local restaurants.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1281" height="1136" title="In the spotlight" alt="Apple iOS 8 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/spotlight_0.png?1411134761" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-8"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Bubbling under </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>A few of iOS 8&rsquo;s biggest features aren&rsquo;t quite ready for prime-time, but warrant mentioning. HomeKit aims to do for automated home gadgets what HealthKit does for health, giving you a hub for configuring and controlling the &lsquo;internet of things&rsquo; within your home, shortly before they turn sentient and take over. Homes comprise rooms (that can be grouped into Zones) that contain Accessories that perform Services, which can have Characteristics. The thinking is you could waggle your device and have you entire house sort itself for night, locking doors, dimming lights and adjusting air temperature. The reality is this is a solution awaiting compatible hardware to become ubiquitous. One for the future, perhaps.</p> <p>Continuity and iCloud Drive are more imminent. The former is designed to enable workflows to seamlessly transition between Apple devices, enabling you, to for example, start replying to an email on your iPhone and then fling it across to your iPad, or answer an iPhone call on your Mac. The Mac side of things is awaiting OS X support (which will arrive with OS X Yosemite this autumn), but already works on iOS. During testing, we managed to send half-written emails successfully between an iPad and iPhone, doing the transfer via the lock screen. It&rsquo;s also possible to use the app switcher, although that didn&rsquo;t fare well during testing, the relevant button frequently vanishing.</p> <p>Family Sharing is another feature that will need time to bed in before we can properly assess it. It&rsquo;s designed to allow a family of up to six to share content bought on a single card, with children under 13 having to ask permission when making purchases. Apps are automatically shared and publishers of other media can opt-in. Additional benefits include a shared photo album, a shared calendar, and unified Find my Friends and Find my iPhone. Set-up is reasonably simple (even if adults may find it awkward for all purchases to be on one card), although there&rsquo;s a curious restriction on only being able to start or join Family Sharing twice in any one year, so watch out for that.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/mac-os-x-yosemite/review" target="_blank">Apple OS X Yosemite hands-on review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1281" height="1136" title="Sharing is caring" alt="Apple iOS 8 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/bubbling_0.png?1411134761" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-9"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The word that most sums up iOS 8 is &lsquo;potential&rsquo;. It lays the foundation for iPhones and iPads to become significantly more powerful devices: hubs of health and home automation; powerful pocketable computers for all kinds of advanced tasks and workflows; and a means to access, edit and share a life of captured images. Right now, some of these things are already barrelling along, with apps taking advantage of extensibility features; others, like HealthKit and HomeKit, are just at the start of their lives.</p> <p>The OS, too, feels like a mixed bag. It&rsquo;s a lot more stable than iOS 7 was on release, and feels pretty robust during use, but it&rsquo;s also very buggy. Spotlight simply stopped working during testing on a number of occasions, and layout bugs frequently cropped up on the iPad. Performance-wise, the OS seemed fine on our iPhone 5s and iPad Air, although Ars Technica has suggested <a href="http://arstechnica.com/apple/2014/09/ios-8-on-the-iphone-4s-performance-isnt-the-only-problem/">iPhone 4s owners should proceed with caution</a>. That device lacks the power and screen size to comfortably deal with the new OS and also doesn&rsquo;t get Continuity or AirDrop.</p> <p>Despite the bugs, the advantages iOS 8 brings make it worth upgrading to unless you only use your iPhone or iPad for the most basic of tasks. The new capabilities unlocked through extensions alone could transform the way you use your device for the better, and the many small changes combine to make an impressive update to what was already a solid mobile operating system.</p> <p>Stay tuned for an updated review once all of iOS 8&#39;s features are live.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iwatch/review" target="_blank">Apple Watch hands-on review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="604" height="453" title="Apple iOS 8 review" alt="Apple iOS 8 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-ios-8-review-03_1.jpg?1411134761" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 0 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-verdict"> <div class="field-label">Verdict:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Once the bugs are squashed and kit/apps take full advantage, iOS 8 will be great. The trick is in figuring out what people are most keen on, along with spinning the kind of smart marketing spiel that will distract people&rsquo;s attention from any dodgy bits and make them think <em>everything is awesome</em>.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/craig-grannell" title="View user profile.">Craig Grannell</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Until relatively recently, most of the THIS in handheld gadgets was all about miniaturisation. Whereas in the 1970s you had desk calculators that could conceivably have been used as an actual desk, by the 1980s, companies were merrily giving away credit-card sized solar-powered equivalents that would frustratingly fail to work unless you happened to be ambling about on the surface of the sun; but, hey, compromise.</p> <p>Then there were the first mobile phones, which were only slightly more convenient than dragging around a telephone box on a trolley, and were eventually blissfully replaced by devices so tiny you ran the risk of losing them down the back of an atom.</p> <p>The current industry obsession is &lsquo;thin&rsquo;. Everything now has to be super-skinny, because it&rsquo;s a factor that can then be used in marketing. Your new smartphone&rsquo;s approximately the same size as an advertising hoarding? We see such problems with Apple&rsquo;s new iPhones, which are beautifully designed pieces of kit that just happen to be too thin to house the camera lens. So while celebrating the fact your iPhone 6 is now precisely 0.7 mm thinner than an iPhone 5s, you can fume that the camera sticks out a bit, making the device wobble when set down on a table.</p> <p>A flush design at the back would have been more aesthetically pleasing, maybe even made the battery slightly bigger, and would have meant Apple&rsquo;s website and photography teams wouldn&rsquo;t have had to clumsily try to pretend a camera bulge didn&#39;t exist. Tablets like the Sony Xperia Z2 are so worryingly thin that they actually have a slight flex; not only does this make an expensive piece of hardware feel worryingly fragile, but also it makes it less comfortable to hold.</p> <p>The new Dell Venue 8 7000 Series is even skinnier, its 6 mm beating the Xperia Z2 by 0.4 mm and the comparatively chunky iPad mini by over 1 mm. Naturally, headlines have been grabbed, for the eleven seconds that Dell&rsquo;s device remains the thinnest tablet that ever thinned, while pretty much no-one wonders whether it might have been better to add some extra heft to boost the battery and speakers.</p> <p>But it looks like thin is here to stay. Intel&rsquo;s Chris Walker has argued in favour of doubling down on the concept of super-skinny tablets, and dreams about ditching bulky ports for charging, data transfer and peripherals. Pretty soon, mobile devices will be so thin ninja will be able to use them as weapons. Frankly, I&rsquo;d rather have a bit more battery life and the means to plug in some headphones.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-releases-ios-8-iphone-ipad-and-ipod-touch/news" target="_blank">Apple releases iOS 8 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet" alt="Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-tablet-01.jpg?1411058221" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Dell Venue 8 7000 Series" alt="Dell Venue 8 7000 Series" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/dell-inspiron-venue-8-7000-series.jpg?1411058221" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/apple/it-s-time-tech-companies-drop-their-obsession-thin/feature#comments Apple Smartphones Tablets Xperia Z Thu, 18 Sep 2014 16:37:03 +0000 Craig Grannell 1447917 at http://www.stuff.tv SwiftKey for iOS revealed - the best Android keyboard, coming soon to your iPhone http://www.stuff.tv/swiftkey-ios-revealed-best-android-keyboard-your-iphone/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> UPDATE 18/09/14: It&#039;s out now. Hope you already have one pre-ordered with a firm ship date, because it sounds like Apple&rsquo;s primary Chinese manufacturer, Foxconn, is having trouble keeping up with the mass demand for the new handsets.</p> <p>According to the Wall Street Journal, the 200,000+ workers operating the 100 or so iPhone production lines at Foxconn&rsquo;s Zhengzhou facility still aren&rsquo;t enough to match buyer interest for the smartphones. The Journal&rsquo;s source says that 400,000 iPhone 6 handsets and 140,000 iPhone 6 Plus devices are being made each day.</p> <p>Part of the problem is that the 5.5in display of the iPhone 6 Plus isn&rsquo;t yet being reliably produced, with the facility scrapping nearly half of the components made due to defects. Yes, it still sports a grippy, soft faux-leather back as seen on the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review" target="_blank">Galaxy Note 3</a>, but the tacky fake stitches are gone. Samsung has also &ndash; finally &ndash; embraced metal phone construction, wrapping the Note 4 with a metal band that&#39;s reminiscent of the outgoing <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review" target="_blank">iPhone 5s</a>. Round the back there&#39;s a heart-rate sensor, while the home button does double duty as a fingerprint scanner.</p> <p>That pleather back is removable, of course &ndash; letting you swap out the 3,220mAh battery and slip in a microSD card for up to 128GB of extra storage. Unlike the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy S5</a>, though, the Note 4 isn&#39;t waterproof &ndash; putting it on a level playing field with the iPhone 6 Plus in terms of durability.</p> <p>Apple has overhauled the design language for its smartphone range this year; the iPhone 6 Plus has an all-metal build that ditches the slab-like design of the iPhone 5s for a softer, curvier look. The power button has moved from the top of the phone to the right hand side &ndash; a virtual necessity for a phablet &ndash; while down the bottom there&#39;s the familiar Touch ID fingerprint sensor. It&#39;s extremely thin, its 7.1mm frame making the Note 4 look positively chunky at 8.5mm thick &ndash; though the camera array does protrude from the surface of the phone, which may prove irksome when you&#39;re setting it down on a table.</p> <p>Apple&#39;s design skills are second to none, though; while Samsung&#39;s made great strides with the Note 4, it&#39;s just not quite as desirable as an object.</p> <p><strong>Verdict: iPhone 6 Plus</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-6-vs-htc-one-m8-weigh/feature">Apple iPhone 6 vs HTC One (M8) - the weigh-in</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/A4zs3D_EEYA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" alt="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/9_1.jpg?1410971266" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" alt="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-4-review-rear_2.jpg?1410971266" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen: bigger is better </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>For its first foray into phablet territory, Apple has opted for a 5.5in, 1080p screen, delivering 401ppi. The Note sports a Super AMOLED display, which delivers punchy colours, true blacks (thanks to AMOLED&#39;s ability to completely turn off pixels) and wide viewing angles. It can be a bit too vivid, but different screen profiles enable you to dial down the colours if necessary. There&#39;s really no contest here; the Note 4&#39;s screen is a thing of beauty, and on specs alone it leaves the iPhone 6 Plus in the dust.</p> <p><strong>Verdict: Galaxy Note 4</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung-galaxy-note-edge/review">Meet the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge - the 3-sided Note 4</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" alt="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-4-review-screen_2.jpg?1410971266" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" alt="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/6_0_2.jpg?1410971266" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera: OIS for everyone </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Apple has stuck with the same 8MP, &fnof;/2.2 iSight snapper found in the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6, augmented with 1.5&micro; pixels &ndash; which Apple claims will deliver swifter autofocus. You also get the nifty two-tone True Tone flash, for better capturing skin tones.</p> <p>For the iPhone 6 Plus, Apple&#39;s kitted out the camera with Optical Image Stabilisation &ndash; a first in an iPhone. It moves the lens components to adjust for your wobbly hands, and should help the camera&#39;s performance in low light situations. The Plus can shoot 1080p video at up to 60fps, and (Apple&#39;s party piece) will also shoot slo-mo video at up to 240fps. The iPhone also features a 1.2MP FaceTime camera, with an &fnof;/2.2 aperture and backside illumination sensor.</p> <p>Sounds impressive, right? Unfortunately for Apple, Samsung has packed an equally impressive camera into the Note 4; a 16MP, &fnof;/2.4 affair, with Optical Image Stabilisation. Focus is snappy, and pictures are &quot;sharp and detailed&quot;, based on our hands-on time with the device.</p> <p>Round the front, the Galaxy Note 4 packs a 3.7MP camera that&#39;ll capture 1080p video &ndash; and also features a &quot;wide-angle selfie&quot; mode; bet Jared Leto wishes Ellen had used a Note 4 instead of a Note 3 for that <a href="https://twitter.com/TheEllenShow/status/440322224407314432/photo/1" target="_blank">Oscars selfie</a>.</p> <p><strong>Verdict: Galaxy Note 4</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" alt="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-4-review-camera_2.jpg?1410971266" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> OS: KitKat vs iOS 8 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>And so to the most contentious issue: iOS 8 versus Android. The battle lines are drawn, the trenches dug &ndash; and the vitriol will doubtless be spewing in the comment section below.</p> <p>Broadly speaking, though, it boils down to a simple choice. Do you want to tinker with the setup of your phone, or would you rather sacrifice the ability to customise it for the assurance of having someone else curate your experience for you?</p> <p>Apple has added a raft of new features to iOS 8 &ndash; fixing a lot of the criticisms that the &#39;droid faithful direct at it. So you get NFC payment (in the US) with fingerprint authentication; third-party keyboard support; and widgets in the notifications pulldown. Apps will now play nice with each other (though Apple will act as gatekeeper), letting you fiddle with camera filters from all your apps by tapping on a photo, or bid on eBay auctions from the Notification Centre. HealthKit will likewise bring together data from several health apps in one place, making keeping fit a lot simpler.</p> <p>Android and Samsung may have introduced those features first &ndash; but that&#39;s immaterial; what matters is how well Apple&#39;s implemented them. It&#39;s certainly removed a big differentiating factor between the two operating systems.</p> <p>The Note 4 comes loaded with <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/android-44-kitkat/review" target="_blank">Android 4.4.4 KitKat</a>, skinned with Samsung&#39;s TouchWiz interface. KitKat&#39;s feature set includes the useful Google Now &ndash; which is at times genuinely eerie in its ability to predict your needs before you know them, and at times infuriatingly obtuse.</p> <p>Samsung&#39;s TouchWiz is &ndash; as per usual &ndash; stuffed with features over and above Android 4.4.4&#39;s already-comprehensive set. BlinkFeed-style news feeds, Smart Rotation and Quick Glance are all handy, but none of them are particularly essential. And Multi Window makes the best of the Note&#39;s screen real estate, letting you run two apps side by side &ndash; very handy for work-related tasks.</p> <p>With iOS 8, Apple has have upped its operating system&#39;s feature set to rival Android&#39;s &ndash;&nbsp;but the Note 4 adds features over and above stock Android, thanks to its S Pen and TouchWiz. However, it&#39;s also worth noting that Android still lags behind iOS in terms of app releases, with many developers still creating apps for Apple first &ndash; or not developing for &#39;droid at all.</p> <p><strong>Verdict: Tie</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: iOS 8: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ios-8/review" target="_blank">Everything you need to know about Apple&#39;s new operating system</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="624" height="468" title="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" alt="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/8_1_0.jpg?1410971266" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" alt="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/note-4.jpg?1410971266" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Features: The S pen is mightier... </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPhone&#39;s standout feature is its Touch ID fingerprint sensor. Whether you&#39;re unlocking apps or (new to iOS 8) using it to authenticate transactions, it&#39;s simple and intuitive. The Note 4&#39;s fingerprint sensor is clunky by comparison, though its ability to launch apps using specific fingers is handy. The Note 4 also packs a heart-rate monitor, though we&#39;ll be honest: it&#39;s far less useful than the plethora of heart-rate sensors on fitness trackers.</p> <p>But what really matters here is the S Pen. Samsung&#39;s stylus adds a raft of handy tricks, and is even more intuitive on the Note 4 than on its predecessor. Improved pressure sensitivity allows for natural handwriting, while you now have the ability to highlight text and select multiple photos using the stylus &ndash; far easier than fiddling about with your fingers.</p> <p><strong>Verdict: Galaxy Note 4</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" alt="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-4-review-apps_2.jpg?1410971266" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Performance: A8 vs Snapdragon 805 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Note 4 is an absolute powerhouse &ndash; Qualcomm&#39;s quad-core 2.7GHz Snapdragon 805 processor provides plenty of grunt, paired with 3GB RAM. Samsung even claims that it&#39;ll outdo the Note 3 in terms of battery life, despite having to power its screen&#39;s increased pixel count. And, of course, you can always swap out that battery when it runs out of juice &ndash; good luck doing that on an iPhone, without a chisel and a soldering iron. Similarly, the Note 4&#39;s 32GB of internal storage is expandable by up to 128GB using microSD; the iPhone 6 Plus is limited to a maximum of 128GB internal memory (and that model will cost you more than a 128GB MacBook Air).</p> <p>Apple is notoriously cagey about releasing the specs of its processors, saying only that the 64-bit A8 that underpins the iPhone 6 Plus is &quot;incredibly powerful&quot;, paired with its M8 motion processor. Benchmarking scores show that the Snapdragon 801 chipset found in the Samsung Galaxy S5 comfortably <a href="http://m.gsmarena.com/iphone_6_a8_gpu_benchmark_suggests_its_behind_the_curve-news-9630.php" target="_blank">outperforms</a> the A8 &ndash; so the Note 4&#39;s Snapdragon 805 should do similarly well. However, because Apple keeps a tight leash on its range of phones, app developers can tailor their software to make the most of Apple&#39;s processors; the fragmented Android platform means that devs can&#39;t do the same, even if individual &#39;droids have more processing power to work with.</p> <p>Despite that caveat, the Galaxy Note 4&#39;s raw power suggests that it&#39;ll outperform the iPhone 6 Plus on paper &ndash; though we&#39;ll have to wait until we can get both devices in for a full review before we can deliver a definitive verdict.</p> <p><strong>Verdict: Galaxy Note 4</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Tv7C4e8thv0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Verdict: take note </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Apple&#39;s making a tentative first step into phablet territory with the iPhone 6 Plus &ndash; and it&#39;s certainly going to appeal to iOS diehards who&#39;ve been desperate for a bigger screen.</p> <p>But Samsung has years of experience making big-screened devices; over the years it&#39;s been making Galaxy Note devices, they&#39;ve evolved from slightly clunky curios into market leaders.
