First photos of Samsung’s rumored Galaxy Tab S leak

Return to AMOLED tablet screens comes in a very Galaxy S5-like package

Earlier this week, word spread that Samsung was planning yet another tablet, the Galaxy Tab S, and now we seemingly have our first look at the larger model.

SamMobile obtained the shots, which show the reported 10.5in version of the Tab S, which is also slated to come in an 8.4in version. Both will utilize a AMOLED display running at 2560x1600, the first such tablet screens rated at WQXGA resolution.

OLED displays are revered for their deeper contrast and lower power consumption than LCD screens, though Samsung hasn’t used them for tablets since 2011’s Galaxy Tab 7.7. Considering the immense screen quality of the Galaxy S5, it makes sense that Samsung’s embracing them for large devices again. And even the perforated rear pattern seems to take its cues from the Galaxy S5.

The Galaxy Tab S is also expected to feature an octa-core Exynos 5420 processor, an 8-megapixel back camera, a 2.1-megapixel front camera, LTE connectivity, a fingerprint sensor, and Android 4.4 KitKat running Samsung’s Magazine UX. SamMobile’s sources suggest that the little circles on the lower back side will be for a specialized book-like cover.

No word yet on release target or pricing for the device, though with the higher-quality screen and impressive specs, it’s likely to be one of Samsung’s richer Tab options.
