The apps you need on your Android device this week

Saving cats from aliens, stopping the destruction of earth and surviving undead - it can only be the best Android apps of the week

Bit of a theme this week for our best Android apps: Saving the day.

Whether that's rescuing cats from an alien invasion, avoiding the destruction of earth or surviving a zombie apocalypse, the latest Android finery will leave you feeling good about yourself. Unless you're an alien. Or a zombie, for that matter.

More after the break...

Super Mega Worm (£0.65)

If the title doesn’t have you scrambling for the download button, the gameplay and the glowing reviews of this new-to-Android retro-styled game should do. With Mother Earth on the brink of distinction, she has sent her last defence, Wojira (aka ‘the Great Death Worm’) to give careless humans what for. Your mission is to crawl, jump, eat and fireball waves of humans and their planet killing machines, growing and evolving into the ultimate weapon of destruction in the process. All this, and an eco message too. Lovely.

Freedom Fall (£3.60)

Freedom Fall is a fast-paced down-scrolling platformer, which sees you running, jumping, swimming and freefalling through a whole host of vertical levels, packed with traps to dodge, balloons to bounce on, jetboards to ride and bad guys to fight. Dark humour abounds, and what might look like a traditional fairytale with a princess, a step-mother, kings, dragons and a magic potion, is not altogether what it seems…

Monster Shooter 2: Back to Earth (£Free)

Imagine an internet without cats. Scary, right? Monster Shooter 2 sees that threat become a reality, as aliens invade the earth in an attempt to swipe all the cats from the face of the planet. You and a rather impressive arsenal of weapons are out to stop this from happening over 80 levels and 4 environments. The single-player has three different game modes (Story, Survival and Endless) or you can try out the co-op gameplay where you and a friend can fight the invasion together, saving the planet’s feline friends from all manner of alien nastiness.
