It looks like a smartphone, it&#39;s shaped like a smartphone, it is a smartphone. It&#39;s a nicely built one though, with a rubberised body, Gorilla glass on both the front and back and expertly machined aluminium buttons.</p> <p>It has a 4.7in screen and dimensions of 139x66.5x8.9mm, which makes it bigger than the iPhone but smaller than every flagship Android out there. All that glass makes it heavier than the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S5 - 160g to the S5&#39;s 145g, although you&#39;re unlikely to notice much difference in use.</p> <p>The iPhone 5s is smaller. It has&nbsp;a 4in screen, measures 123.8x58.6x7.6mm and weighs a lot less than the Fire: a mere 112g. Like the Fire Phone it&#39;s beautifully built, with an aluminium shell and typically Apple attention to detail.</p> <p>In short, both phones have premium builds and classy looks. We might change our opinion once we&#39;ve actually seen the Fire Phone in the flesh, so to speak, but until then this round&#39;s a tie.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Draw</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Metal and glass" alt="Amazon Fire Phone vs Apple iPhone 5s: the weigh-in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/fire-phone-5s-1.jpg?1403729636" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> SCREEN </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>On specs alone the Fire Phone&#39;s display is a disappointment. With a resolution of 1280x720 - that&#39;s 315ppi - it looks decidedly antiquated next to the 1080p screens of the Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One (M8), let alone the 2K display of the LG G3.</p> <p>Against the 5s, though, it&#39;s a close-run thing: the iPhone&#39;s 1136x640 resolution isn&#39;t too hot itself, and its 326ppi is near enough to the Fire Phone&#39;s that you&#39;d barely spot the difference in pixel density.</p> <p>But there is one significant advantage to the Fire Phone - it&#39;s 3D. Well, kind of. On the front of the handset sit four cameras - one in each corner - which track the position of your head and calculate how you&#39;re looking at the screen. Through some clever software tricks it then displays an image which appears to have depth.</p> <p>This differs from the standard 3D method of making images appear to come out of the screen, and has several uses - you can, for instance, look to the side of labels on a map in order to read the text underneath. Or look behind objects in games. Or simply marvel at the various 3D-effect lock screens.</p> <p>Is it genuinely useful? It&rsquo;s too early to say. Developers have the potential to create some truly innovative apps for the Fire&rsquo;s 3D screen, so we&rsquo;ll remain tentatively optimistic for the time being.</p> <p>Until we wrap our hands around some mind-blowing 3D apps though, it&rsquo;s another draw for now.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Draw</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Not one, not two, but THREE Ds." alt="Amazon Fire Phone vs Apple iPhone 5s: the weigh-in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/FirePhone-D-Maps-Yelp_0.jpg?1403729636" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> CAMERA </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPhone 5s is generally regarded as having one of the best smartphone cameras around, and like the Nokia Lumia 1020 &ndash; it&rsquo;s constantly used as a benchmark to measure the imaging prowess of rival devices.</p> <p>The iPhone 5s&rsquo; 8MP camera produces more detailed, more accurate shots than many of its 13MP Android competitors, so the Fire Phone&rsquo;s 13MP camera isn&rsquo;t guaranteed to be the superior snapper, despite the extra megapixels it offers.</p> <p>The iPhone&rsquo;s dual-LED amber/white flash could mean that its colours will still be more accurate, especially with skin tones.</p> <p>The Fire Phone, like the LG G3, also offers optical image stabilisation, which, on paper, means it should cope well with movement and low-light shots.</p> <p>Both cameras have their advantages. While the Fire Phone is technically running Android, it&#39;s a very heavily modified version called Fire OS v3.5 - and its unrecognisable from stock Android.</p> <p>The bad news is that the Fire Phone lacks the official Google Play Store and Google apps. Not only does that mean no Gmail, Google Maps, Play Music or Hangouts, it also means that users will have to settle for Amazon&#39;s Android App Store.</p> <p>While Amazon&#39;s alternative app storefront has plenty of apps to fill its shelves, there&#39;s no escaping the fact that the official Play Store has more.</p> <p>The iPhone 5s therefore comfortably beats the Fire Phone when it comes to both the number of apps, and the quality of those on offer.</p> <p>The Fire Phone does fight back with a few Amazon exclusives however. Its Mayday feature is ideal for the less tech-savvy, serving up a direct connection to an Amazon helper who can help troubleshoot problems in real time.</p> <p>Amazon&#39;s Firefly feature is also rather impressive. New emails, recent photos and favourite websites are presented on the home screen beneath their respective apps, and it&#39;s Amazon&#39;s answer to stock Android&#39;s widgets.</p> <p>Amazon has released a Dynamic Perspective SDK which will enable developers to take advantage of all of these features. emerged late last night after the debut of Amazon&rsquo;s Fire Phone is the fact that it only supports Bluetooth 3.0&mdash;that means that the device won&rsquo;t ship with compatibility with the Bluetooth 4.0 LE (low energy) standard that makes wearables work well with phones.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s an odd omission, but not a critical one, apparently. Amazon tells Mashable that the functionality will be patched into the device via a software update after launch. Still, considering all of the neat little features built into the device, it&rsquo;s certainly a strange oversight.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://mashable.com/2014/06/18/amazon-fire-phone-bluetooth/">Mashable</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/amazon/amazon-fire-phone-8-things-you-need-know-about-retailer-s-3d-smartphone/news">Amazon Fire Phone &mdash; 8 things you need to know about the mega retailer&rsquo;s 3D smartphone</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> PlayStation 4 digital pre-orders can now be pre-loaded </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>One of the big benefits of buying digital versions of big AAA console video games on the release date is that you don&rsquo;t have to wait for daylight hours to hit the store and grab a copy&mdash;but when there&rsquo;s a 30GB download staring you in the face, you might be better off just going to bed anyway.</p> <p>Luckily, that&rsquo;s about to change with PlayStation 4 games, or at least the most notable ones to start. Sony announced yesterday that digitally pre-ordered games can be downloaded to your console days before the release date, so they&rsquo;ll be there and ready to unlock right at midnight upon launch.</p> <p>Massive upcoming releases like Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Battlefield Hardline, and Uncharted 4: A Thief&rsquo;s End are all on the list, and next week&rsquo;s film tie-in Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark will be the first to kick off the initiative. If it&rsquo;s like most movie games, however, that might be one to hold off on pre-ordering before the reviews drop.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2014/06/18/pre-order-pre-load-upcoming-ps4-games/">PlayStation.Blog</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/e3-2014-six-things-sony-s-ps4-event-you-need-see/feature">PlayStation at E3 2014: Six things from Sony&rsquo;s PS4 event that you need to see</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="583" title="Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark" alt="Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/transformers-game.png?1403231435" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> T-Mobile US loaning out iPhone 5s, killing data fees for streaming music </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>T-Mobile may have <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/amazon/fully-charged-amazon-phone-already-stirring-carrier-spats-youtube-s-about-block-bunch-music-v">missed out</a> on the Fire Phone, but it made its own interesting splash on Wednesday. Continuing its &ldquo;Un-carrier&rdquo; initiative, T-Mobile US announced that it will allow prospective customers to borrow an iPhone 5s handset for a full week to test out the service&rsquo;s LTE connectivity.</p> <p>&ldquo; Our network kicks ass, and now people can experience for themselves what a data-strong network can do with T-Mobile Test Drive,&rdquo; says outspoken CEO John Legere. T-Mobile expects more than a million people to try out the Test Drive within the first year, and Apple will provide the carrier the (likely refurbished) units needed for the initiative.</p> <p>Additionally, T-Mobile unveiled a Music Freedom program that allows certain mobile music streaming services&mdash;Spotify, Pandora, Rhapsody, iHeartRadio, iTunes Radio, and Slacker&mdash;to function without counting against users&rsquo; data plans. It&rsquo;s unclear whether either of these big changes will extend beyond the States, though perhaps competing carriers will follow their lead.</p> <p>[Sources: <a href="http://recode.net/2014/06/18/t-mobile-offers-music-streaming-free-of-data-charges/">Recode</a>, <a href="http://newsroom.t-mobile.com">T-Mobile</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review">iPhone 5s review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="883" title="T-Mobile Test Drive" alt="T-Mobile Test Drive" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/tmobile-testdrive.png?1403159581" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/amazon/fully-charged-amazon-s-fire-phone-isn-t-wearable-friendly-launch-ps4-pre-orders-can-be-pre-lo#comments Amazon Fire Phone Gaming iPhone 5S PlayStation 4 T-Mobile Thu, 19 Jun 2014 06:30:00 +0000 Andrew Hayward 1439537 at http://www.stuff.tv Amazon Fire Phone — 8 things you need to know about the mega retailer's 3D smartphone http://www.stuff.tv/amazon/amazon-fire-phone-8-things-you-need-know-about-retailer-s-3d-smartphone/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> After months of rumours, Amazon’s first handset is unveiled—here are the essential details </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Amazon Fire Phone" alt="Amazon Fire Phone" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/firephone-opener.jpg?1403193210" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Slated to debut in late July, Amazon&#39;s powerful Android-based smartphone uses multiple cameras to deliver 3D depth on its screen, and also offers the impressive-sounding Firefly feature that&rsquo;ll help you get info about real-world items quickly (and, of course, buy them).</p> <p>Curious about what to expect from this fresh handset? Exclusivity on @ATT sucks for the industry. #justsayin&rdquo;</p> <p>He went on to say, &ldquo; When #big (@ATT) and #bigger (@Amazon) get together, the industry feels a whole lot smaller.&rdquo; Granted, Legere has a history of talking trash about rivals&mdash;particularly AT&amp;T&mdash;so this is hardly a startling development.</p> <p>We&rsquo;re only hours away from getting our first official look at Amazon&rsquo;s so-called Kindle phone, which is expected to feature several front-facing infrared cameras that work together to create a 3D effect. However, there are holdouts, and those labels will soon see their music videos blocked from viewing and effectively held for ransom until they take whatever YouTube is offering.</p> <p>The report says that well-known indie labels like Domino and XL Recordings have yet to sign the agreements, and that means artists like Adele and Arctic Monkeys could soon see their hit videos pulled&mdash;within days, it seems. In fact, the embedded video above (which has a staggering half-billion views) might not even work next week.</p> <p>We&rsquo;re taking a risk with that, but so is YouTube here in attempting to strong-arm labels to sign potentially poor deals to keep their videos online. And yet with the streaming service&rsquo;s incredible scale, we&rsquo;d guess that most of the holdouts will acquiesce just to maintain the status quo and not be left out.</p> <p>[Source:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/ea6728e2-f568-11e3-afd3-00144feabdc0.html">The Financial Times</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/youtube/ces-2014/youtube-show-low-bandwidth-4k-streaming-ces/news">YouTube to show off low-bandwidth 4K streaming at CES</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/rYEDA3JcQqw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> World’s largest video game collection sold for US$750,250 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It can be taxing to keep your stacks and shelves of games organized, but all of our paltry collections combined couldn&rsquo;t match up to that of Michael Thomasson, a video game historian who has amassed more than 11,000 games for various platforms, along with rare hardware and the like.</p> <p>Family responsibilities forced Thomasson to sell off his collection&mdash;certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest around&mdash;and it&rsquo;s completed its four-day run on gaming auction site GameGavel, drawing a top bid of US$750,250.
