Fancy physics aside, this means that the HDX has a 100% colour gamut, compared to the iPad Mini&#39;s 62%.&nbsp;The HDX can therefore display a larger range of colours than the iPad Mini, and colourful pictures really do pop a little more on the HDX.</p> <p>The Mini wins with purer whites though, making whites on the HDX seem dull and grey in comparison.</p> <p>While both screens are excellent, the Mini just edges ahead of its rival, thanks to its extra size and purer whites.</p> <p><em>Winner:</em> <strong>iPad Mini</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Apple iPad Mini with Retina Display vs Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7" alt="Apple iPad Mini with Retina Display vs Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ipad-mini-retina-review-versus-mini-1-homescreen_2.png?1391446096" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="567" height="425" title="Apple iPad Mini with Retina Display vs Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7" alt="Apple iPad Mini with Retina Display vs Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-kindle-fire-hdx-lockscreen-1_1.JPG?1391446096" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Metal vs plastic </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Yep, it&#39;s another classic fight between Apple&#39;s sleek and solid metal build quality and a plastic-clad Android competitor.</p> <p>The iPad Mini is, as ever, a gorgeous slab of tech, and every inch of it has Apple&#39;s premium quality stamped all over it.</p> <p>The Kindle Fire HDX can&#39;t compete with the iPad Air&#39;s premium feel, but its soft-touch matte plastic rear is actually very pleasant to hold - it offers plenty of grip without feeling cheap. The shiny plastic strip along the top lets it down though, and it&#39;s a rather nasty fingerprint magnet too. The HDX is noticeably lighter than the iPad Mini and will be more comfortable to hold during a movie marathon.</p> <p>For its sheer premium build however, the iPad Mini wins the design round, as all Android, Amazon has customised it beyond recognition, infusing it with its own App Store, and even ads if you opt for the cheaper HDX model.</p> <p>It&#39;s actually a lot less confusing for non-tech savvy users to use than Android, but if you&#39;re a tech-head that&#39;s already familiar with Google&#39;s mobile OS then you&#39;ll find Amazon&#39;s Fire OS frustratingly dumbed down and too limited.</p> <p>Not only that, but you&#39;ll only be able to access apps from Amazon&#39;s App store, which lacks the full selection of apps available on Google&#39;s official Play Store.</p> <p>Still, if you&#39;re looking for a small simple tablet for your mum then the HDX&#39;s Mayday feature which offers free 24/7 live assistance from Amazon will be an absolute godsend.</p> <p>For the We pit it, spec-for-spec, against the cheap and cheerful Tesco Hudl, current Android pick-of-the-bunch the Google Nexus 7, and the so-premium-it-hurts, Retina display-equipped Apple iPad Mini 2. Google&rsquo;s pad has a thinner frame on either side of the screen, whilst keeping the top and bottom bezel much the same, which means it can be easily grasped in one hand for portrait reading. The Kindle Fire and Hudl are a more traditional tablet shape: fatter around the edges. The Kindle&rsquo;s camera is positioned for use in landscape mode, while the Nexus 7 works better in portrait.</p> <p dir="ltr">Given its larger screen, you&#39;d think the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-mini-2-retina/review" target="_blank">iPad Mini 2</a> might be substantially larger than the Android tablets, but at 200 x 134.7 x 7.5mm it&#39;s the thinnest by some margin, and only a wee bit bigger than the others.</p> <p dir="ltr">All three Android tabs are built from matte plastic, though the Kindle wins out aesthetically with its angular, tapered edges on the rear that are faintly reminiscent of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/microsoft-surface-windows-rt/review">Microsoft Surface</a>. No bad thing. The iPad Mini? Its elegant aluminium and glass body is a class apart from the Android models &ndash; and that&#39;s one of the reasons why the asking price is so much higher.</p> <p><strong>Winner: </strong>Apple iPad Mini 2</p> <p><strong>Best of the rest: </strong>Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Amazon Kindle Fire HDX rear" alt="Amazon Kindle Fire HDX rear" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/HDX-rear.jpg?1388053070" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Google Nexus 7 (2013) rear" alt="Google Nexus 7 (2013) rear" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/NEX-rear.jpg?1388053070" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Tesco Hudl rear" alt="Tesco Hudl rear" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/tesco-hudl-rear.JPG?1388053070" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="iPad Mini 2 rear" alt="iPad Mini 2 rear" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-ipad-mini-retina-rear.png?1388053070" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Same screen, different body </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p dir="ltr">Both the Nexus and the Fire HDX 7 have dramatically improved screens compared to their predecessors. They&rsquo;re equipped with 7-inch, 1920x1200 IPS-LCD designs boasting an ultra-crisp 323ppi. &nbsp; On paper there&rsquo;s little to separate the two screens, although the HDX boasts &#39;100% sRGB technology&#39; that it claims results in improved colour accuracy, while Google claims nothing beyond eye-slicingly sharp resolution. <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google-nexus-7-2013/review">Our review</a> calls the Nexus 7&#39;s screen &quot;razor sharp, brilliantly bright and altogether rather jaw-dropping&quot; and the HDX gets similar praise &ndash; with one caveat: &quot;white webpages can nudge towards the creamier end of the spectrum and when using apps or browsing pages with a white background, you occasionally encounter a blue tint, especially in the corners. It&#39;s minimal, barely noticeable when watching movies, but once you spot it you won&#39;t be able to stop your eyes travelling back to it.&quot;</p> <p dir="ltr">After launching the first-gen iPad Mini with a somewhat disappointing 1024x768 screen, Apple has gone all out with its successor: the iPad Mini 2 offers a 7.9in 2048 x 1536 Retina display (also 323ppi) &ndash; larger than the above Android models&#39; displays but just as sharp. Our review notes that the iPad Air&#39;s screen (with slightly less pixel density) tops the Mini 2&#39;s when it comes to vibrancy and colour accuracy, but the Mini 2&#39;s remains among the best tablet screens around thanks to its wide viewing angles and high brightness level, which means you rarely need to nudge it past half power.</p> <p dir="ltr">And the Hudl? While it doesn&#39;t match the better-than-1080p screens of the other trio, its 7in 1600x900 (242ppi) display is better than you&#39;d find on most &pound;120 tablets, and offers decent viewing angles. In our review, however, we weren&#39;t especially impressed with the brightness, contrast or colour range &ndash; things all the other screens here excel in &ndash; and found the display to be &quot;an absolute smudge-lover&quot;, attracting fingerprints a little too readily.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>Winner: </strong>Apple iPad Mini 2</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>Best of the rest: </strong>Google Nexus 7</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Google Nexus 7 screen" alt="Google Nexus 7 screen" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/NEX-front.jpg?1388053070" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="848" title="Kindle Fire HDX 7 screen" alt="Kindle Fire HDX 7 screen" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/HDX-family.jpg?1388053070" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="iPad Mini 2 screen" alt="iPad Mini 2 screen" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-ipad-mini-retina-review-screen-colours.png?1388053070" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Tesco Hudl screen" alt="Tesco Hudl screen" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/tesco-hudl-review-hands-on-screen-bright_0.jpg?1388053070" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Power play </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p dir="ltr">The Tesco Hudl is the weakest model when it comes to on-paper specs, with 1GB of RAM and a 1.5GHz quad-core Rockchip processor. AnTuTu benchmarks, however, don&#39;t put it too far behind the Nexus 7 (not that benchmarks tell the whole story, of course. It comes with only 16GB of on-board storage, but can be expanded by a further 32GB thanks to to microSD slot. Our review describes it thus: &quot;the Hudl generally flies, tearing up HD movies and games such as Bounty Arms like a turbo trolley tearing up Aisle Six at 3am. Web browsing is smooth enough, though we were surprised to see the Hudl struggle with streaming movies compared to its rivals amid talk of dual-band Wi-Fi.&quot;</p> <p dir="ltr">The Nexus isn&rsquo;t slow by any means &ndash; there&rsquo;s a Qualcomm S4 Pro under the hood running at 1.5GHz with an Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB of RAM. Our review notes that &quot;the device feels incredibly fast and responsive no matter how much you multi-task or game. 1080p movie performance is equally smooth - there&#39;s a moment of lag to load, but after that we&#39;ve not spotted a single judder in the playback of an entire season of Breaking Bad in HD.&quot;</p> <p dir="ltr">In our test the Nexus never stuttered, so there may be little real-world advantage to the Kindle&rsquo;s additional grunt. The Amazon tab packs the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at an incredible 2.2GHz, plus a mighty Adreno 330 GPU. And it flies: &quot;They&#39;ve chucked everything at the HDX, and Fire 3.0 runs beautifully as a result. It&#39;s amazing that a tablet as reliably fast and capable as this new Kindle Fire is going for just &pound;200 &ndash; Amazon&#39;s really stepped up the performance, and it makes the difference in the little bits of navigation around the OS. Some of the stores, such as Games, can stutter when scrolling through choices, but apps download quickly thanks to dual-band Wi-Fi, while streaming is spot-on.&quot;</p> <p dir="ltr">The iPad Mini 2 has undergone a major upgrade in the hardware stakes from the first Mini, but you might not know it from its on-paper specs: it sports less than a GB of RAM and its A7 processor is dual-core and clocked at 1.3GHz. That just goes to show that on-paper specs don&#39;t mean a whole lot in the real world, because the Mini 2 runs as smooth as you could wish for and has no issues with HD video &ndash; in fact, it streams video more smoothly than the Nexus 7 and HDX 7. Still, we feel the Kindle has the edge in terms of raw power.</p> <p dir="ltr">The Kindle and Nexus are available in 16, 32GB and 64GB variants, but neither can be expanded. It&#39;s quoted as providing 9 hours of use but we found that optimistic - even with light use it was almost dead after a day.</p> <p dir="ltr">The iPad Mini 2 lasted a full 9.5 hours in our HD video playback test, and will go on far longer with normal use. In short, anyone who likes to experiment with or tweak their gadgets will prefer the Nexus 7.</p> <p dir="ltr">In contrast, Amazon&rsquo;s thick FireOS 3.0 &lsquo;Mojito&rsquo; skin hides almost all aspects of Android&rsquo;s desktop-style UI with a huge carousel that puts your music, books and movies front and centre. Fortunately, it&rsquo;s now much simpler to use, with a conventional app drawer that you can pin your media to, and context-sensitive menus you pull in from the sides of the screen. Amazon has the media side of things covered with direct, dangerously simple access to its huge online candy shop. Unfortunately the same is not true of apps: the Kindle offers a cut-down selection compared to Google Play, which is the thorniest part of Amazon&rsquo;s &lsquo;walled garden&rsquo; approach to the Kindle ecosystems. The plus side is that Amazon provides near limitless cloud backup for nothing, builds in customisable profiles or kids (FreeTime) and even provides live help via videoconferencing (Mayday).</p> <p dir="ltr">The Tesco Hudl, like the HDX 7, uses Android Jelly Bean, but it&#39;s an older 4.2.2 version upon which Tesco has slathered some of its own touches in the form of a few &#39;apps&#39; for (really just links to) services like Blinkbox, Tesco Bank, Tesco Direct, Tesco Mobile and Tesco Clubcard. The latter is likely to be of some interest to those that shop at Tesco regularly, as it tracks Clubcard points and shows you relevant offers. Aside from that, it&#39;s pretty much stock Android.</p> <p dir="ltr">The iPad Mini 2, of course, uses iOS 7. It&#39;s our favourite tablet operating system due to the sheer amount of tablet-tailored apps on offer (Android is poorly served in comparison, with most of its tablet apps merely being upscaled from the phone version), and comes with plenty of freebies like Garage, iMovie, iPhoto and Pages. iCloud, meanwhile, keeps everything synced across all your iDevices and computers. If apps are more important to you than web browsing and media consumption, the iPad should be your choice - even though it&#39;s significantly pricier than the others here.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>Winner</strong>: Draw. If we had to pick between the two? Despite the extra layer of control that the HDX 7&#39;s FireOS 3.0 provides and its slightly better battery life, we&#39;d still plump for the Nexus 7 as the pick of the small Android slates: the openness and customisability of its &#39;pure&#39; Android KitKat OS gives it a small edge.</p> <p dir="ltr">The iPad Mini 2 is expensive, starting at &pound;320 for the Wi-Fi only 16GB model (the 4G-compatible 128GB model is a staggering &pound;660), but features the largest screen, sturdiest build quality and, thanks to iOS 7, access to a substantially better selection of tablet apps than any of the Android models. It&#39;s our pick of the bunch here because, in the words of our review, &quot;the Retina Mini really is the future of tablets: supremely portable, bursting with amazing apps and with no significant compromises.&quot; It&#39;s Stuff&#39;s preferred small tablet &ndash; in fact it&#39;s our second favourite tablet on the market after the iPad Air.</p> <p dir="ltr">If you want to read more about all these tablets, <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google-nexus-7-2013/review">enjoy our Nexus 7 review here</a>, our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-mini-2-retina/review">iPad Mini 2 review here</a>, our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/tesco-hudl/review">Hudl review here</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/amazon/kindle-fire-hdx/review">Kindle Fire HDX 7 review here</a>.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-nexus-7-amazon-kindle-fire-hdx-apple-ipad-mini-tesco-hudl.jpg?1388053070" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Mini tablet showdown </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-standfirst"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item standfirst:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Kindle Fire HDX, Nexus 7, Hudl and iPad Mini 2 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/kindle-fire-hdx/amazon-kindle-fire-hdx-7-vs-google-nexus-7-2013-weigh/feature#comments iPad Mini 2 Kindle Fire HDX Nexus 7 Tablets Mon, 09 Dec 2013 13:37:15 +0000 Will Findlater 1428153 at http://www.stuff.tv Kindle Fire HDX 7 http://www.stuff.tv/amazon/kindle-fire-hdx/review <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Amazon&#039;s Kindle Fire HDX 7in combines a luscious screen with quad-core power and a price that&#039;ll keep your wallet happy </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Kindle Fire HDX review" alt="Kindle Fire HDX review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/amazon-kindle-fire-lockscreen-2.JPG?1406606423" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sophie-charara" title="View user profile.">Sophie Charara</a> </div> </div> </div> <p>Android can be a scary place.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s why Amazon&rsquo;s Kindle Fire range of tablets has been such a huge success - From HD Lovefilm streams of <em>Looper</em> to hi-res images loaded onto the HDX, everything looks clear and clean from every angle. Skintones look natural and vivid colours dazzle in the best possible way.</p> <p>The better-than-full HD screen on the HDX is gorgeous, then, with one small niggle: white webpages can nudge towards the creamier end of the spectrum and when using apps or browsing pages with a white background, you occasionally encounter a blue tint, especially in the corners. It&#39;s minimal, barely noticeable when watching movies, but once you spot it you won&#39;t be able to stop your eyes travelling back to it. If films are your bag, clap your hands over your ears and pretend you never heard us say anything about the HDX&#39;s slightly blue LED tendency.</p> <p>Dual stereo speakers with Dolby Digital Plus audio sound nice and punchy, too, and the placement at the top of the HDX&#39;s back mean you&#39;re unlikely to accidentally cover one up. Even the virtual 5.1 surround sound does a decent job - we actually paused a Netflix stream to check if some background jazz was coming from the tab or another room.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Kindle Fire HDX review" alt="Kindle Fire HDX review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-kindle-fire-hdx-lockscreen-1.JPG?1406606423" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Kindle Fire HDX review" alt="Kindle Fire HDX review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-kindle-fire-hdx-review-movies-storage.JPG?1406606422" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Performance: Blazes, naturally </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>People buy Kindle Fire tablets because they don&#39;t want to get lost in the Google Play woods, not for the latest specs. But with the HDX, Amazon&#39;s gone for high-end processing power in the form of a 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chip, Adreno 330 graphics and 2GB of RAM. The <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google-nexus-7-2013/review" target="_blank">Nexus 7</a>, by comparison, is &#39;only &#39; running on a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro. <p>What does that mean? They&#39;ve chucked everything at the HDX, and Fire 3.0 runs beautifully as a result. It&#39;s amazing that a tablet as reliably fast and capable as this new Kindle Fire is going for just &pound;200 &ndash; Amazon&#39;s really stepped up the performance, and it makes the difference in the little bits of navigation around the OS. Some of the stores, such as Games, can stutter when scrolling through choices, but apps download quickly thanks to dual-band Wi-Fi, while streaming is spot-on.</p> <p>So it&#39;s a bit of a beast, but it&#39;s worth mentioning that you might not be able to download the exact Android games (or versions) that you&rsquo;re after. Amazon controls what goes on its App Store with a fervour that makes even Apple look pretty chilled out. If gaming on your slate is a high priority you&rsquo;re probably still better off with a <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google-nexus-7-2013/review">Nexus 7</a>, and its unfettered access to the Play Store.</p> <p>There&#39;s still no rear camera on the 7in Kindle Fire tab (unlike the 8.9incher, which has an 8MP cam), but we wouldn&rsquo;t consider that a deal-breaker for most tableteers. Skype&#39;s present and correct on the Kindle store and there&#39;s a decent HD front-facer with a camera app for selfies. It&#39;s not as good as the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-mini/review" target="_blank">iPad Mini</a> in poorly lit living rooms but it does the job.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Kindle Fire HDX review" alt="Kindle Fire HDX review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-kindle-fire-review-multi-tasking.JPG?1406606422" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Amazon Kindle Fire HDX tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Operating System - Fire 3.0 Mojito (based on Android 4.2.2) <p>Processor - 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800</p> <p>RAM - 2GB</p> <p>Screen - 7in LCD with 1920x1200 resolution (323ppi)</p> <p>Camera - front-facing HD camera (unspecified MP)</p> <p>Storage - 16/32/64GB (not expandable)</p> <p>Connectivity - Dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS,&nbsp;optional 3G/4G</p> <p>Battery - undisclosed&nbsp;</p> <p>Dimensions - 186 x 128 x 9mm</p> <p>Weight - 303g (Wi-Fi only), 313g (3G/4G)</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> OS and apps: Flaming Mojito </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We&rsquo;ve already touched on this, but just to be clear: Amazon tablets do run on Android, just not as we know it. The latest Fire OS 3.0 &lsquo;Mojito&rsquo;, on the HDX, is based on Jelly Bean, but as usual it&rsquo;s more than just a skin of widgets, settings menus and useless pre-installed apps.&nbsp; <p>There&rsquo;s no access to the regular Google Play stores. Instead, your options are Shop, Games, Apps, Books, Music, Videos, Newsstand, Audiobooks, etc. With the extra pixels, Amazon&rsquo;s now able to display most of the menu options on one screen, which is great if you want to bypass the Amazon stores to head to the Silk browser, gorgeous scrolling photo gallery and Docs.&nbsp;</p> <p>But you won&rsquo;t want to as Amazon does a superb job of presenting what&rsquo;s on the device, what you already own in the cloud and what&rsquo;s available to buy from the stores. The only piece of the puzzle that&rsquo;s missing is movie downloads - it&rsquo;s frustrating with a Wi-Fi only tablets that all those Lovefilm movies can only be streamed. You can load your own HD movies, via microUSB from your computer, but we&rsquo;d like the option to quickly download a flick before a flight, for instance.&nbsp;</p> <p>The same amazingly useful carousel of recently used apps returns but is now joined by a grid of installed apps, available if you swipe upwards from the main homescreen. It&rsquo;s a neat touch that makes accessing any app - not just the one you used yesterday - very quick. In portrait, Amazon uses mini app icons under the huge ones to suggest similar apps - calendar under email and newer versions of <em>Angry Birds</em> under the game you&rsquo;ve already got, for example. Sure, its intention is to get you downloading and spending more, but it can be a time-saver too.&nbsp;</p> <p>Swipe down from the top of the screen and there&rsquo;s a quick access menu to auto-rotate, a brightness slider, Wi-Fi settings, a &lsquo;Quiet Time&rsquo; notifications killer and the new Mayday button. Compared to what&rsquo;s classed as customer service elsewhere, this is pretty special. Twelve seconds after we pressed the quick access button and hit &lsquo;Connect&rsquo; a lovely Scottish gentleman was giving us advice on using the HDX &ndash; Amazon staff pop up as a video call window and can see and manipulate what&rsquo;s on your screen - they can&rsquo;t see you, thank heavens. Resist the urge to ask them to deliver you pizza - they&rsquo;re real human beings, kids.&nbsp;</p> <p>It&rsquo;s 24/7 and must be costing Amazon a fortune but we&rsquo;ve been testing the HDX since it went on sale and response time has been excellent.</p> <p><strong>Check out our Kindle Fire HDX&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/amazon/kindle-fire-hdx/gallery?viewid=103963" target="_blank">picture gallery</a></strong></p> <p>Universal search includes libraries, stores and the web. Elsewhere, the Silk browser - which didn&rsquo;t exactly live up to its name in the past - now absolutely flies, with fast, responsive browsing. Amazon&rsquo;s Cloud Drive for storing photos from iPhones, Android phones, Facebook and the like is easy to use, too, and although it doesn&rsquo;t offer anything particularly new, we can see plenty of HDX users jumping on board with this. For managing files in the cloud, we still prefer Google&rsquo;s comprehensive Drive and opening, editing and sharing documents on the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google-nexus-7-2013/review">Nexus 7</a> is an absolute dream with Google&rsquo;s apps front and centre.&nbsp;</p> <p>What lets the HDX down is its limited access to the Google Play store and its increasing number of quality tablet apps, essentials and fantastic games. Protecting your users from the dross is one thing, (and you can sideload apps the naughty way if you&rsquo;re particularly committed) but it would be nice if Amazon would let through more of the quality content, and in a timelier fashion.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Kindle Fire HDX review" alt="Kindle Fire HDX review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-kindle-fire-hdx-review-apps-close.JPG?1406606423" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Kindle Fire HDX review" alt="Kindle Fire HDX review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-kindle-fire-hdx-review-apps-screen.JPG?1406606423" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Kindle Fire HDX review" alt="Kindle Fire HDX review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-kindle-fire-hdx-review-email.JPG?1406606422" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Kindle Fire HDX review" alt="Kindle Fire HDX review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-kindle-fire-hdx-review-photos-2.JPG?1406606423" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Keep those tykes at bay </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Kindle FreeTime is a feature that&#39;s present in both models of the Kindle Fire HDX, and it extends parental controls beyond the usual pins and passwords.</p> <p>Parents can select all of the content they want their children to see, and the small blighters can&#39;t change anything in the FreeTime settings without a password. That&#39;s good parenting right there.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Battery Life: A Fire that won’t go out </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>With a battery life of nine-and-a-half to ten hours of constant games, Lovefilm, emails and browsing, that&#39;s just below Amazon&#39;s eleven hour boast but still incredible for a tablet with such a high resolution and such an affordable price. <p>Standby stamina is pretty handy, too &ndash; after a couple of days of light use the HDX was still hanging on at around 30%. The <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google-nexus-7-2013/review" target="_blank">Nexus</a> does have a slightly brighter screen, but with both set to halfway we found the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google-nexus-7-2013/review">Nexus 7</a> needed charging slightly more often over the course of a week.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Kindle Fire HDX review" alt="Kindle Fire HDX review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-kindle-fire-hdx-review-battery-life.JPG?1406606422" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Storage: All hail the 64GB model </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Price and storage are going to be huge factors in any HDX vs <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google-nexus-7-2013/review">Nexus 7</a> decision. And at 16GB, we&#39;d choose the Nexus &ndash; the HDX costs &pound;10 more (without the ads) and uses up more space on Fire 3.0 than the Nexus does on stock Jelly Bean. For 32GB, the prices stay roughly the same, too, at a reasonable &pound;240. <p>But if you&#39;re serious about an HD movie collection stored locally on a Wi-Fi tablet, <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00CYR6UTM/ref=fs_so" target="_blank">the HDX comes in a &pound;329 64GB version</a> that the Nexus just doesn&#39;t offer yet. Want to feel even more smug? A 64GB iPad Mini with Retina costs &pound;480. If you&#39;re going for a 3G/4G model (starting at &pound;270), chances are you&#39;re a streaming baby and won&#39;t worry about loading up the HDX with your music and movie library, in which case you may as well keep it small.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Kindle Fire HDX review" alt="Kindle Fire HDX review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-kindle-fire-hdx-review-search.JPG?1406606423" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>This is a real <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google-nexus-7-2013/review" target="_blank">Nexus 7</a> alternative. As long as standing at the cutting edge of new apps isn&rsquo;t a big priority the HDX &nbsp;has you well and truly covered, from browsing to cloud storage to buying books, music and magazines. Bringing a new, pepped up Fire OS, zinging along on a Snapdragon 800 and with a crisp, dazzling screen, this 7in Kindle Fire is even up there with the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-mini/review" target="_blank">iPad Mini</a> for the best hardware we&rsquo;ve seen on a small tablet. <p>It&rsquo;s the friendliest, most iOS-like version of Android we&rsquo;ve seen, too. But for us, despite the cool points from the HDX&rsquo;s build, the sensible 64GB option and the genius Mayday button, <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google-nexus-7-2013/review">Google&rsquo;s Nexus 7</a> remains our top small slate. Amazon offers a huge variety of download treats, but without the smartphone hardware, app ecosystem and spit and polish of iOS or the openness and customisability of the Nexus, it&rsquo;s still got a little bit of work to do. That&#39;s why it earns a spot in our list of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/tablets/top-ten">best tablets money can buy</a>, below Google&#39;s finest.&nbsp;</p> <p>But in a world that already includes the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google-nexus-7-2013/review">Nexus 7 </a>and iPad Mini it takes something special to standout, and the Kindle Fire HDX certainly does that. That&#39;s thanks in no small part to the genius Mayday button, which is probably what every other Android tablet manufacturer is hitting right about now.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Kindle Fire HDX review" alt="Kindle Fire HDX review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-kindle-fire-hdx-review-silk.JPG?1406606423" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> power </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> screen </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> build </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> apps </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 7 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-verdict"> <div class="field-label">Verdict:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>A stunning tablet at a tasty price, if you&rsquo;re happy to trade app quantity for quality of experience this is a dream device</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-preview"> <div class="field-label">Preview:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Disabled </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><legend>Carousel Extras</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Amazon Kindle Fire HDX review </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-standfirst"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item standfirst:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> &quot;A real Nexus 7 alternative&quot; – but does the HDX light up our lives? </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/amazon/kindle-fire-hdx/review" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/amazon/kindle-fire-hdx/review#comments Amazon Kindle Fire HDX Tablets Tue, 19 Nov 2013 09:19:30 +0000 Tom Parsons 1427975 at http://www.stuff.tv
