You can also install apps and games (more on all that below), and adjust the Fire TV&rsquo;s settings.</p> <p>The remote control is a simple one, with only the buttons you need on board: cursor, back, home, options and playback controls, plus a microphone button that fires up voice search. It mostly works just as it should, except for the occasional bout of lag (more on that below).</p> <p>The cloud-powered voice search works very smoothly. Hold the mic button, wait for the tone and speak and the Fire TV will quickly bring up a list of content based on the term. It&rsquo;s so accurate (it never once slipped up when we used it) and fast enough that it&rsquo;ll swiftly become the default way you search for things. There&rsquo;s one issue with it, however: it only searches for Amazon-derived content, and won&rsquo;t delve into third-party services. So if, say, you were to voice search for &ldquo;Sons of Anarchy&rdquo;, the results would list only the Amazon Prime version and Amazon&rsquo;s rent/buy options, not the show on Netflix.</p> <p>Owners of Amazon&#39;s Fire Phone or Kindle Fire HDX tablets can use their device as a second screen while watching Prime movies (viewing info on the actors etc. &ndash; it&#39;s all a bit basic and pointless in our opinion, but some might enjoy it), or fling pages from their mobile device onto their living room telly through the Fire TV. Other phones and tablets don&#39;t work.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The voice search results only list Amazon-derived content" alt="The voice search results only list Amazon-derived content" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-fire-tv-voice-search.jpg?1415700017" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Movies, TV and music </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Amazon Prime members will get the most out of the Fire TV. A subscription to the service allows you to stream a wide selection of films and TV shows through the box, many of them in 1080p HD quality. The streaming picture quality isn&rsquo;t up to Blu-ray standards &ndash; we found it a little soft at times, even with big ticket films like <em>The Dark Knight Rises</em>, and there&rsquo;s visible contouring in smooth colour gradations &ndash; but it&rsquo;s not bad at all.</p> <p>Amazon Music users can also access their cloud-stored MP3 collections by linking the Fire TV with their account. Obviously, you&rsquo;re probably not going to want to use your telly&rsquo;s tiny speakers in place of a proper hi-fi, but if you&rsquo;ve got the Fire TV wired to a decent speaker system this is a handy way to access more music.</p> <p>But it&rsquo;s not limited to Amazon&rsquo;s own services. You can also rent or buy individual films and shows for a fee (most films are &pound;3.49 to rent and between &pound;7.99 and &pound;9.99 to own), and there&rsquo;s also, via installable apps, access to third-party video services like Netflix, BBC iPlayer and Demand 5. Streaming video quality is also impressive with these, although as mentioned above you can&rsquo;t scout their libraries using the Fire TV&rsquo;s voice search option &ndash; you&rsquo;ll have to type in text using the remote instead.</p> <p>Another app lets you turn the Fire TV into a Spotify Connect music player, meaning you can grab your smartphone or tablet, fire up the Spotify mobile app and (provided you&rsquo;re a premium subscriber), play your tunes through the Fire TV.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/spotify/why-you-should-care-about-spotify-connect/feature">Why you should care about Spotify Connect, the tech that&#39;ll fill your home with streamed music</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="You&#039;ll need a Prime account to get the most out of the Fire TV" alt="You&#039;ll need a Prime account to get the most out of the Fire TV" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-fire-tv-video.jpg?1415700017" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Gaming </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Amazon has made much of the Fire TV&rsquo;s capabilities as a games console, but in reality it&rsquo;s not going to give the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/playstation-4/review" target="_blank">PS4</a>, <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/microsoft-xbox-one/review" target="_blank">Xbox One</a> or <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nintendo-wii-u/review" target="_blank">Wii U</a> any sleepless nights &ndash; it&rsquo;s basically the equivalent of a powerful tablet as a gaming device. There&rsquo;s nothing wrong with that, of course, and for those who don&rsquo;t want to shell out megabucks for a &ldquo;real&rdquo; console there are some good games here, albeit mostly reworkings of mobile titles. Telltale&rsquo;s <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/walking-dead-episode-one/review"><em>The Walking Dead</em></a> is probably the highlight at launch (both &ldquo;seasons&rdquo; of the game are available for free, if you&rsquo;re a Prime subscriber), but there are a handful of other reasonably diverting games &ndash; and more are on the way.</p> <p>The &pound;35 wireless controller resembles a squarer Xbox 360 pad. It&rsquo;s not as comfy as that controller, and there&rsquo;s no rumble function, but overall it&rsquo;s a fine gamepad that means you can actually play action games. The Fire TV&rsquo;s regular remote can be used to play more sedate, simple games.</p> <p>We have noticed severe input lag at various times when using the gamepad and the remote, and it&#39;s been so bad (three to four seconds) that it made the Fire TV nigh-on unusable. A reset of the box (which involves literally unplugging the power cable, then plugging it back in &ndash; there&#39;s no other way) sorted it, but it&#39;s happened more than once. Hopefully Amazon this is a simple bug that Amazon is in the process of squashing, because having to monkey around with cables gets old really fast.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/playstation-4/review" target="_blank">Sony PS4 long-term review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The controller is very Xbox 360-ish" alt="The controller is very Xbox 360-ish" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-fire-tv-games-controller.jpg?1415700017" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Amazon Fire TV verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>While you couldn&rsquo;t call it totally open, the Fire TV isn&rsquo;t locked inside its walled garden quite as tightly as the Apple TV is &ndash; let&#39;s say the gate is ajar. It&rsquo;s a games console, too &ndash; OK, it&#39;s more Ouya than PS4, but it&#39;s a step in the right direction and already works well - when it works.</p> <p>That lag issue needs fixing pronto, and we want to see more (or expandable) storage and wider scope for voice search in future updates, but this is a great first effort at a living room streamer from Amazon.</p> <p>It might look like an Apple TV rip-off, but this is an altogether smarter breed of streamer. The Quality of Life initiative isn&rsquo;t set to debut until 2016, so it could be some time before we&rsquo;re all measuring and analyzing our sleep with help from the house that Mario built, but it&rsquo;s certainly an intriguing twist for the company.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/library/events/141030/05.html">Nintendo</a> via <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2014/10/29/7130229/nintendo-qol-sleep-tracking-device">The Verge</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/3ds/nintendo-shows-updated-3ds-and-3ds-xl-designs/news">Nintendo shows off updated 3DS and 3DS XL designs</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="675" title="Nintendo&#039;s sleep tracker" alt="Nintendo&#039;s sleep tracker" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nintendo-sleep-tracker_0.jpg?1414742698" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Amazon Fire TV Stick sold out through end of year </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Amazon didn&rsquo;t bother mentioning a UK release date for its just-revealed Fire TV Stick, a low-priced streaming video competitor to Google&rsquo;s Chromecast and the Roku Streaming Stick, but we have a feeling it won&rsquo;t be until sometime in 2015.</p> <p>That&rsquo;s because new U.S. orders placed as of yesterday won&rsquo;t be delivered until January at the earliest - a solid couple of months after its 19 November release there. Although the Apple TV continues to evolve, it does so at a lethargic pace, only very occasionally adding the odd new channel that no-one in particular asked for, and ignoring other applications the device might be good for, such as gaming.</p> <p>To outsiders, this must seem strange, especially given that important gaming pieces have been in place within Apple&rsquo;s ecosystem for some time: iOS has a huge range of games, many hundreds of which are really very good indeed; and AirPlay enables any game to be slung at a TV via an Apple TV. </p> <p>More recently, iOS games controllers entered the mix, providing console-like controls, rather than you sliding fingers around on glass and cursing as Sonic the Hedgehog blunders on to a spike and impales himself like the blue-furred idiot that he is.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="AirPlay lets you beam iOS games to the big screen" alt="Opinion: Amazon’s Fire TV shows it’s time for the Apple TV to embrace gaming" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-tv-gaming.jpg?1398302671" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>A closer look, though, shows cracks in this line of reasoning. Existing iOS games controllers are pricey and mostly mediocre, games support is spotty, and those games that do support controllers often require the touchscreen for menus.</p> <p>The Apple TV itself still lacks its own App Store, and even if it had one, developers say creating games for it would be akin to working with an entirely new system, given how radically different the interface would be from other iOS devices. Even if they did make the effort, the Apple TV has a tiny amount of on-board memory, and so is hardly suited to anyone installing high-end games; a suitable bump in storage would almost certainly be met by a hefty change in price-tag, either splitting the Apple TV line or moving a solitary offering well outside of the current impulse-purchase price-bracket.</p> <p>So: the controllers aren&rsquo;t much cop, developers argue it would be a ton of work to support a more games-friendly Apple TV, existing hardware can&rsquo;t cope anyway, and a new Apple TV might put people off by being prohibitively expensive.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/moga-ace-power-first-official-iphone-games-controller/review" target="_blank">Moga Ace Power - the first official iPhone games controller review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="604" height="453" title="Steel Series&#039; Stratus controller" alt="Opinion: Amazon’s Fire TV shows it’s time for the Apple TV to embrace gaming" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/steel-series-stratus.jpg?1398302671" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="604" height="453" title="Moga Ace Power controller" alt="Opinion: Amazon’s Fire TV shows it’s time for the Apple TV to embrace gaming" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ACE%20POWER%201_0.png?1398302671" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Still, none of those problems is insurmountable; the bigger issue is probably that Apple still doesn&rsquo;t seem to get gaming, nor seem to really care about it. Similar issues also affect digital rental and sales services (in the latter case, notably those that store your purchases in the cloud).</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/b1JtkqrTsU0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Amazon Fire TV" alt="Amazon Fire TV" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-fire-tv-01.jpg?1397045028" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Silos, Silos Everywhere </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The problem is, silos fragment the viewing experience, and you&rsquo;re forced to choose between services that use shows or movies they temporarily &lsquo;own&rsquo; as differentiators and weapons. Even if you select a service, based on its catalogue aligning with your own tastes, there&rsquo;s no guarantee it won&rsquo;t change within a year or even a month. Good luck keeping track &mdash; and if you&rsquo;re half-way through a virtual box-set, you&rsquo;d best hope it&rsquo;s not deleted before you finish.</p> <p>In the long run, everyone loses. People don&rsquo;t get to watch all the shows they&rsquo;d like to, and shows don&rsquo;t get watched by all the people who might. Some people resort to downloading torrents, thereby denying income to the people and companies that created a show, potentially reducing the likelihood of those shows still in production continuing.</p> <p>And presumably due to not wanting to piss partners off, we&rsquo;re not yet at the stage where we can tell a semi-intelligent TV unit what we want to watch and have it return the options for doing so. Even if we could, a seamless experience would only exist if you had the money and means to sign up to Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and a host of other services anyway.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ULwUzF1q5w4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Sky+ Box Sets" alt="Sky+ Box Sets" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sky-tv.jpg?1397045028" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Companies often talk about openness. Amazon states the Fire TV is part of an &lsquo;open ecosystem&rsquo;, and Chromecast is considered by many the most &lsquo;open&rsquo; TV extension, presumably due to its cross-platform support and Google yelling &lsquo;open&rsquo; every five minutes, then waiting for its fans to respond in kind as if part of a political rally.</p> <p>But all of these systems &mdash; Apple&rsquo;s, Roku&rsquo;s, Amazon&rsquo;s, Google&rsquo;s, and more &mdash; remain beholden to a way of thinking that seems increasingly archaic, and yet appears to be strengthening.</p> <p>Technology exists to provide content worldwide, for an affordable price, on as many services as possible, and in a timely manner.
