Even its <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/acer/acer-liquid-leap-smartband-hands/news">Liquid Leap smartband</a> made a cameo. But the focus was on devices you&#39;ll actually buy and for Acer that means neat and tidy, good value tablets, laptops and a surprise appearance from its next smartphone the Liquid Jade.&nbsp;</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sophie-charara" title="View user profile.">Sophie Charara</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Bang for Buck Tablets </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>With a 10.1in HD 1366x768 screen, Intel Atom innards, eight hours of battery and a compact, light form factor it could be a winner for anyone who dreams of a MacBook they can pull apart. For under &pound;300. Acer is bigging up the magnetic Snap Hinge and while we&#39;ve seen something similar from the likes of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/asus/asus-transformer-book-t100/review">Asus Transformer Book T100</a>, it&#39;s a big, big step up from Acer&#39;s previous mechanisms and fiddly keyboard cases. It can be used as a laptop, tablet or in display or tent modes. Plus the Switch 10 is &pound;50 cheaper than the Asus.&nbsp;</p> <p>Acer&#39;s two other new tablets are both 7in in size and both run Android - Windows 8.1 for work, Android for play apparently.&nbsp;</p> <p>The grey/silver Iconia Tab 7 will be a tidy &pound;150 when it goes on sale in May plus it offers 3G and even voice calls if you&#39;re that way inclined. Two words: Bluetooth headset. There&#39;s nothing here to worry the Nexus 7 too much - 720p screen, quad-core processor, 5MP camera, 8.9mm build. But if price is your main consideration, the Tab 7 could be a winner.&nbsp;</p> <p>Equally, Acer&#39;s gone down the Nokia route with the Iconia One 7 - a slightly lower specced, heavier (330g) Android 4.2 tab that runs on Intel Atom and comes in six colours. In the flesh, it&#39;s rather nice - the rear panel is textured so doesn&#39;t look as cheap as a bright pink, glossy Asus MemoPad HD 7. At a glance, the 720p screen is disappointing but we&#39;ll give the full review unit another look when it&#39;s ready before the mid-May release.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Acer Aspire Switch 10 as a tablet " alt="Acer Aspire Switch 10 as a tablet " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/acer-switch-10.JPG?1398821952" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Acer&#039;s Aspire Switch 10 closed " alt="Acer&#039;s Aspire Switch 10 closed " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/acer-aspire-switch-10-closed.JPG?1398821952" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Acer Tab 7 gets its close up " alt="Acer Tab 7 gets its close up " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/acer-tab-7.JPG?1398821952" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Acer&#039;s Tab 7 make calls. Named the Liquid Jade, Acer confirmed it will be coming to the UK and Europe. But we know almost nothing else about it at this stage. Still, Google&rsquo;s superb Drive takes care of office duties, while the likes of YouTube, Netflix and Spotify are all present.</p> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-pricing"><legend>Pricing</legend><div class="field field-type-number-float field-field-test-price"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> £200.00 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-price-from"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 0 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-ratings"><legend>Ratings</legend><div class="field field-type-hcmreviewrating-rating field-field-overall-rating"> <div class="field-label">Overall rating:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="hcmrating-default">8 stars</div> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-pros"> <div class="field-label">Pros:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Cheap </div> <div class="field-item even"> Plenty of ports </div> <div class="field-item odd"> Decent battery life </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-cons"> <div class="field-label">Cons:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Below-par screen </div> <div class="field-item even"> Tinny speakers </div> <div class="field-item odd"> Lacks power </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>Review Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Simple pleasures </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Acer&rsquo;s dressed the 11.6in C720 in a kind of tech Burton suit: all grey, corporate dourness. However, the screen hinge could be sturdier – the downside of Acer’s S3 being so damned light is that the lid is the heaviest part, which means the Ultrabook can wobble a bit when resting on your lap.</p> <p>However, the plastic chassis pays off when it comes to the weigh-in, with the Acer S3 tipping the scales at 170g less than the 13.3in Air. By way of comparison, that still makes it slightly heavier than a Sony Vaio Z or Toshiba’s forthcoming Portégé Z830 – but even in the top-whack specification we tested (with Intel Core i7 and a 320GB HDD) the Acer is still £400 cheaper than either one and £450 than a similarly skilled top-end MacBook Air. Granted the Air comes with a 256GB SSD, but the S3's solid-state cache means you won't notice the usual speed difference.</p> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/review/apple-macbook-air-2011">Read the MacBook Air 2011 review here</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="500" height="375" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/acer-s3_1_1_0.jpg?1372356252" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Acer Aspire S3 screen test </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>For many, that £450 premium is still worth it for the Mac’s crisper screen, big SSD and unibody wonderment. Viewing angles aren’t great either, but as long as you turn the backlight up and keep the screen face-on, it’s not a disaster.</p> <p>The chiclet keyboard isn’t the most responsive around, and keys require a purposeful tap to register, but it’s well spaced out and solid under the touch. Great for multi-tasking and video encoding… even gaming (with the details turned down). It does mean the fan is always audible, mind, and the base can get a little hot.</p> <p>Acer has tweaked the Windows settings to make the device better at waking up from standby. In Deep Sleep mode, the battery will last for 50 days, yet be up and running Windows within six seconds. (We actually timed it starting faster than that.)</p> <p>The lifespan of the power cell is dependent on the LED backlight. While that could be seen as money well spent (much of it pays for the all-solid-state memory and Apple laptops have a healthier resale value than their peers), Acer’s svelte Ultrabook is still worth considering. After all, with a similar spec, the MacBook Air is a tad slower than the S3.
