Legendary Italian designer Sergio Pininfarina passed away earlier this week, so we thought we’d honour his memory by taking a gander at five of his agency’s finest works – and while Pininfarina is best known for automobile design, there are tons of other interesting products that leapt to life from the firm’s drawing boards.

Lancia has lost much of its allure as a car brand, but back in the 70s it shook up the market with this mid-engined, Pininfarina-designed coupé (also available as a convertible). A winner on the race track, the Montecarlo may not be the most elegant of sports cars, but its retro appeal endures.

The latest design from Pininfarina’s agency is a collaboration with Korean urban transport company Vectus. The PRT, or Personal Rapid Transit, is a small driverless vehicle – about the size of a taxi – that takes you directly to a requested stop. The curvaceous pods will be seen zooming around the Suncheon area of Korea in 2013.

3M drafted in Pininfarina to give two of its new projectors a bit of Italian flair – and the Bravo was the pick of the bunch. Curvaceous and sweeping, it sported a swivel base for easy adjustment and brought a touch of elegance to many a meeting room.

A true icon of the decadent 1980s, the “redhead” coupé is one of many classic Ferraris designed by Pininfarina. Featuring such flourishes as pop-up headlights and distinctive side intakes, it quickly cemented itself as a pop culture staple thanks to appearances in Miami Vice and Out Run.

When Turin was chosen as the host city of the 2006 Winter Olympics, it fell to the Turin-based Pininfarina to design the torch. In our opinion, it’s a darn sight better than the London 2012 torch – and its look echoes both the tip of a ski and the Mole Antonelliana, a local monument.
