5 of the best new concept cars

Is it a bird? Is it a spaceship? Nope – these are finest new concept cars money can’t buy

Is it a bird? Is it a spaceship? Nope – these are finest new concept cars money can’t buy. At least not in 2010…

Jaguar C-X75

Four electric motors power the individual wheels to produce 778hp, catapulting this beast from 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds. It’ll run for 68 miles on batteries, but there are a pair of gas turbines in reserve to extend that to 559 miles, a distance you’ll cover in well under three hours at its top speed of 205mph.

Lamborghini Sesto Elemento

Two and a half seconds. That’s the average lifespan of a large pizza at Stuff HQ. It’s also the amount of time it takes the Elemento to reach 62mph, an honour it can proudly share with Bugatti’s mighty Veyron. That’s not surprising – thanks to a forged carbon shell, it weighs about the same as the pizza delivery man’s bike.

Citroen Lacoste

Car, beach buggy or golf cart? Citroen’s latest updates the French carmaker’s catalogue of vehicular craziness (remember the 2CV's dashboard-mounted gearstick?) with a twist of croc-shirted chic. In this case, an inflatable soft top deploys from the “roof” when it starts raining and there’s also a retractable windscreen and funky digital dashboard. No word on adjustable suspension or horizontal gearsticks…

Peugeot EX1

Anyone who says they don’t want a Batmobile is either a liar or has an army of stuffed toys populating the parcel shelf of his diesel 205 Style. Peugeot’s all-electric EX1 is as close as you can get to the look of the Dark Knight’s ride, and it’ll go from standing to 100kph in just over 3.5 seconds. Top speed: 160mph. Bat signal projector not included.

Audi Quattro Concept

To celebrate the Quattro’s 30th birthday, Audi could have baked a cake. Instead, it spent over two years coming up with a recipe for lightweight power and stunning design. The Quattro Concept packs a 408hp punch from a twin turbocharged engine driving all four wheels via a six-speed gearbox. Not the most exciting concept in this list, perhaps, but the one you’re most likely to be able to buy. For a price.
