There&rsquo;s a standard button stick, which is nicely laid out, and then there&rsquo;s the minimalist, touchpad-tastic One-Flick remote, which is unfortunately utterly unintuitive and more than a little frustrating. <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/55ub950v/lg-55ub950v-4k-tv/review" target="_blank">LG&rsquo;s Magic Remote</a> this ain&rsquo;t.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="Those feet can be moved to the middle if your TV shelf isn&#039;t as wide as the telly" alt="Sony KD-55X8505B 4K TV" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Sony-KD-55X8505B-3-1600x900.jpg?1409853687" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="900" height="900" title="There&#039;s a camera for Skyping, but it can be removed to make the TV&#039;s lines even neater" alt="Sony KD-55X8505B 4K TV" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Sony-KD-55X8505B-camera-900x900.jpg?1409853687" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Full spectrum </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>So the aesthetics aren&rsquo;t particularly fancy, but Sony has sensibly refrained from stripping down the specs.</p> <p>What you get here is about as much as you&rsquo;ll get on any current set: four HDMI 2.0 inputs, three USBs and a bunch of legacy connections such as SCART and component (we do hope you&rsquo;re not using these anymore. There are Freeview HD and satellite tuners, and the t&rsquo;interweb connection can be hard-wired and wireless.</p> <p>Less visible but arguably even more important to a 4K telly is the internal HEVC decoder, which is what Netflix wants for 4K streaming. Considering the rarity of 4K footage right now, we&rsquo;d say that&rsquo;s pretty important. Bear in mind you&rsquo;ll need good internet speeds: 15-20mbps is recommended.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/netflix/netflix-time-broadcasters-are-doing-4k-we-ll-be-next-thing/news" target="_blank">Netflix - by the time broadcasters are doing 4K, we&#39;ll be on to the next thing</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Sony has the all-important HEVC codec on board - you need that for Netflix 4K" alt="Sony KD-55X8505B 4K TV" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Sony-KD-55X8505B-side-1200x900.jpg?1409853687" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="550" height="900" title="Surely we can just do away with the Scart connections now, can&#039;t we?" alt="Sony KD-55X8505B 4K TV" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Sony-KD-55X8505B-back-550x900.jpg?1409853687" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sony KD-55X8505B tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Screen size</strong>: 55in</p> <p><strong>Resolution</strong>: 3840 x 2160</p> <p><strong>Display technology</strong>: LCD with LED backlight</p> <p><strong>Speaker output</strong>: 20W</p> <p><strong>Built-in camera</strong>: yes</p> <p><strong>Connectivity</strong>: Freeview, Satellite (x2), HDMI 2.0 (x3), USB (x3), Component, Composite, Scart, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Headphone, Optical output</p> <p><strong>Dimensions (hwd)</strong>: 79 x 123 x 28.5cm with stand, 74 x 123 x 6.6cm without stand</p> <p><strong>Weight</strong>: 24.1kg</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 4K? Who in their right mind would get a 4K TV and not immediately load up some 4K? It&rsquo;s straight to Netflix for a bit of <em>Breaking Bad</em>.</p> <p>We watch Bryan Cranston fiddle with blue crystals and it looks lovely. As is the point of 4K, the picture is superbly detailed and razor sharp. Edges are well defined without looking processed.</p> <p>Colours are rich, but skin tones remain convincing. We wouldn&rsquo;t call it a natural palette &ndash; it&rsquo;s a little punchy &ndash; but it&rsquo;s never noticeably unrealistic, and there&rsquo;s plenty of subtlety in gradation and shading. To say this is a step-up from Blu-ray doesn&rsquo;t do justice to how much of a massive jump it is.</p> <p>But the Sony does have a weakness, and it&rsquo;s the depth of the black levels. It never gets really, truly, inky dark, so very dim scenes suffer. The Black Corrector setting helps, but even so the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung/samsung-ue55hu7500-4k-tv/review" target="_blank">Samsung UE55HU7500</a> edges ahead.</p> <p>The Samsung also does better with the standard-def and 1080p stuff you&rsquo;ll be asking it to upscale on a regular basis. Sony always handles colours beautifully, but it loses out on fine detail and subtlety.</p> <p>And if you&rsquo;re one of the few people who actually enjoys watching 3D movies at home, you&rsquo;ll be pleased to hear that the Sony plays them well, with decent brightness, minimal crosstalk issues, and passive 3D glasses that are very comfortable. There&rsquo;s no escaping looking like a nerd, though.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/netflix/25-best-things-watch-netflix-right-now/feature" target="_blank">The 30 Best Things to Watch on Netflix right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The passive 3D specs are light and comfy. Take the Social View button, for instance. That turns the TV into a sort of Twitter (but worse) with a feed scrolling along the bottom of the screen. Less pointless is the Discovery feature, which gives access to favourite and oft-used services, while recommending related content.</p> <p>Sony&rsquo;s app offering is fairly strong, but not quite as comprehensive as Samsung&rsquo;s. There&rsquo;s still no sign of ITV Player or 4oD, but you do get BBC iPlayer, Amazon Instant Video and Netflix, as well as Sony&rsquo;s own on-demand Video Unlimited service, which gives pay-as-you-go access to loads of movies day-and-date with the DVD release, all in 1080p with surround sound.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/bravia/sony-bravia-s90-sony-reveals-not-so-curved-new-curved/news" target="_blank">Not-so-curved is the new curved, according to the Sony Bravia S90 4K TV</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="It&#039;s neat and intuitive, but the Sony smart hub doesn&#039;t have quite as many apps as Samsung&#039;s" alt="Sony KD-55X8505B 4K TV" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Sony-KD-55X8505B-1-1600x900.jpg?1409853687" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Choose your weapon!" alt="Sony KD-55X8505B 4K TV" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Sony-KD-55X8505B-remotes-1200x900.jpg?1409853687" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sony KD-55X8505B 4K TV verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If you&rsquo;re after the very shiniest, most sparklingly advanced 4K TV out there, this isn&rsquo;t it. What&rsquo;s more, its performance is decidedly god-like.</p> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-pricing"><legend>Pricing</legend><div class="field field-type-number-float field-field-test-price"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> £2,200.00 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-price-from"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 0 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-price-notes"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Also available in 48in (£1600), 65in (£3500) and 75in (£6000) versions </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-ratings"><legend>Ratings</legend><div class="field field-type-hcmreviewrating-rating field-field-overall-rating"> <div class="field-label">Overall rating:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="hcmrating-default">10 stars</div> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-pros"> <div class="field-label">Pros:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Great picture from SD, HD and 4K </div> <div class="field-item even"> Excellent specs </div> <div class="field-item odd"> Upgradeable </div> <div class="field-item even"> Good range of smart features </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-cons"> <div class="field-label">Cons:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Nothing </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>Review Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Pretty, practical </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The UE55HU7500 is also really pretty, but not in the overly showy way you might expect. This is shiny and handsome, but it will blend in nicely with your living room furniture and you don&rsquo;t need super-wide shelves to make room for it. The HU7500 is relatively modest, sitting on a simple pedestal with a smart brushed-metal effect. It&rsquo;s so down-to-earth that it doesn&rsquo;t look like a Samsung TV at all. For the truly determined, there&rsquo;s one each of component, composite and SCART, but hopefully your beyond those ancient connections by now, aren&rsquo;t you?</p> <p>Then we get to the One Connect port. No, it&rsquo;s not an input for teenage boy bands &ndash; it&rsquo;s for plugging in an extra module for future upgrades. That means the TV won&rsquo;t get too dated too soon. The more you watch, the more accurate the service is. It&rsquo;s only mildly creepy.</p> <p>The new stuff for this year is minimal: when you press the &lsquo;Smart Hub&rsquo; button, two bars appear on the screen as an overlay, without interrupting your current programme. One of these leads you to the smart hub; the other is a list of recent activity. That means you no longer have to scroll through BBC parliament and porn to get to your favourite channels at the far ends of the programming wasteland. Just use the shortcut to flick between your most-used choices.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/netflix/netflix-time-broadcasters-are-doing-4k-we-ll-be-next-thing/news" target="_blank">Netflix: by the time broadcasters are doing 4K, we&#39;ll be on to the next thing</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="There are plenty of apps onboard, including Netflix" alt="Samsung UE55HU7500 4K TV review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Samsung-UE55HU7500-netflix-app.jpg?1407675781" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1400" height="900" title="The TV will recommend programs to suit your specific taste. But what you won&rsquo;t hear is Mary Berry complaining that the side of one of the cakes looks curved when it should be straight. Because while Sony&rsquo;s new S90 is its first in the UK with a curved screen, it is less prominently curved than other TVs of its ouvre and so straight line distortion is minimised.</p> <p><strong>But how would Mary know&hellip; oh, never mind. The advantage of a curved TV &ndash; the way it delivers light to the curved surface of your peepers &ndash; is all present and correct. But the S90 is the result of some hefty research into where the sweet curve radius lies. Between 5000mm and 11000mm, says Sony. The picture is super sharp, and it&rsquo;s easy to pick out all the little details. If you&rsquo;ve ever felt the need to scrutinise every line on Kevin Spacey&rsquo;s face, here&rsquo;s your chance.</p> <p>The picture isn&rsquo;t very subtle, however. After marvelling at all the texture afforded by Ultra High Definition, attention falls to the colours. They&rsquo;re very punchy, and in a showroom environment would have no problem grabbing your attention, but you miss the super-realistic nuance and gentle gradation that you get from a truly stunning TV set. The LG also struggles a bit with contrast, and blacks are rarely properly dark.</p> <p>When it comes to upscaling 1080p, the LG does a good job. The picture is as sharp and clean as on a good HD TV, and there&rsquo;s little in the way of noise. Motion could be a little more stable, but that can be fine-tuned in the settings.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/stuff-cool-list-2013-4k-now-ready-conquer-your-living-room/feature" target="_blank">Here&#39;s why 4K TV is set to conquer your living room</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> LG 55UB950V Tech Specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Screen size</strong>: 55in (also available in 65in)</p> <p><strong>Resolution</strong>: 3840 x 2160</p> <p><strong>Display technology</strong>: LCD with LED backlight</p> <p><strong>Speaker output</strong>: 35W</p> <p><strong>Connectivity</strong>: Freeview, HDMI 2.0 (x4), USB (x3), Component, Composite, Scart, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Headphone, Optical output</p> <p><strong>Dimensions (hwd)</strong>: 776 x 1232 x 242mm with stand, 734 x 1232 x 60mm without stand</p> <p><strong>Weight</strong>: 24.2kg with stand, 23.1kg without stand</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> WebOS, the ingenious interface </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It wasn&rsquo;t long ago that smart TV interfaces were unmitigated rubbish. In fact many smart portals are still very much like that.</p> <p>LG&rsquo;s new WebOS (also known as LG Smart+ TV for no reason at all) is the kick up the backside the TV designers should have had years ago. It&rsquo;s got no specific &lsquo;hub&rsquo; to visit. Everything is laid out in the Launcher, a pop-up bar that comes and goes without interrupting your current programme. The idea is to introduce all manner of multitasking, so you can jump between YouTube, Netflix, a specific IT program and your games console as easily as flicking from BBC One to BBC Two on a standard TV.</p> <p>The system is laid out chronologically. A big window in the centre is your current choice. Go left to see recently view channels and apps. Go right to flick through all the other apps you&rsquo;ve downloaded, which you can rearrange as you please. Operation is super-slick, with no significant lag at all. Thankfully the England Supporters Band were nowhere to be seen (or, more importantly, heard) due to a ban on musical instruments in stadiums. Back in England I shared the cinema showing the game with people in suits, who looked like they&rsquo;d have no issue with participating in a Mexican Wave or mugging at the camera despite their team being 3-0 down. Apart from the noisy German sitting directly behind me it wasn&rsquo;t exactly raucous. The header that Rooney put against the bar from about four centimetres will haunt us for a good few years yet, while the one he put straight at the keeper from a few yards out would&rsquo;ve been a goal had he been wearing a United shirt. In the 4K quarter-final there were times when the ref&rsquo;s wonderfully rendered combover seemed more entertaining than the game itself and an Ultra HD half-time replay of Hamez Rodriguez&rsquo;s wondertonk against a Suarez-less Uruguay was certainly well received, although that would look spectacular no matter how many pixels it was made up of.
