Back in London, Sony was far more helpful. They showed it at 3840x2160, which I discovered is enough to see Raphael Varane&rsquo;s nipples through his shirt during the national anthems, if that&rsquo;s your sort of thing. Like football in 3D, it&rsquo;s less noticeable on the wide shots from the top of the stands, although you could practically pick out individual faces in the crowd on the far side. The range offers UHD Upscaling, which&rsquo;ll turn any source material into 4K (don&rsquo;t expect it to look anything like as good as a true 4K source, of course); Quad Screen Multi-Link, which lets you split the screen into four sections and have different content showing on all four; and a new five-panel Smart Hub version of Samsung&rsquo;s Smart TV platform powered by a quad-core processor. Both models will be available in the US from August.</p> <p>Finally, there&rsquo;s the new HU6970 4K range, which offers the same features as the HU7250 but with a more traditional flat screen. With the amount of physical controls on offer, you probably won&rsquo;t need to use this capability often, but it can be handy for quickly setting the autofocus point.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-a7r/review">Sony A7R review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The GH4&#039;s screen will rotate every which way" alt="Panasonic Lumix GH4" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/panasonic-gh4-hand-screen.jpg?1402505450" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Packed with features both useful and otherwise </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Wi-Fi and NFC are de rigeuer for higher-end cameras at the moment, and the GH4 leaps aboard this bandwagon. The idea is that you simply tap your NFC-enabled phone on the side of the GH4 and it&rsquo;ll swiftly establish a Wi-Fi connection, allowing you to control the camera functions through <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.panasonic.avc.cng.imageapp" target="_blank">Panasonic&rsquo;s Image App</a>. After ten minutes of trying this to no avail, we gave up &ndash; the connection started, but always stalled halfway. Sadly, this is typical of Wi-Fi equipped cameras at the moment &ndash; the end result isn&rsquo;t worth the fuss and frustration. Other connection options include QR code and manual.</p> <p>Also, as a possible consequence of the sheer amount of power needed to handle 4K video recording, the GH4 has one of the beefiest image processors of any camera around. Called the Venus Engine, it features a quad-core CPU that, as well as allowing 4K, makes vast improvements to noise reduction and picture quality. The GH4 can shoot up to ISO 25600 and, while the results are noisy (see the image above), they are usable - mighty impressive considering the insane sensitivity level at which they&rsquo;re being taken.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="A shot taken on the Panasonic GH4 at 25600 ISO" alt="Panasonic Lumix GH4" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/panasonic-gh4-high-iso.jpg?1402505450" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Panasonic Lumix GH4 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Sensor</strong> - 16MP Live MOS</p> <p><strong>ISO range</strong> - 100-25600</p> <p><strong>Lens mount</strong> - Micro Four Thirds</p> <p><strong>Viewfinder</strong>&nbsp;- 2,359,000 dot OLED</p> <p><strong>Screen</strong>&nbsp;- 3in 1,036,000 dot OLED</p> <p><strong>Video formats</strong> - AVCHD, MP4, MOV</p> <p><strong>Video resolution</strong> - 3840 x 2160 4K, 1080p, 720p</p> <p><strong>Connectivity</strong> - Wi-Fi, NFC, miniHDMI, GPS</p> <p><strong>Dimensions</strong> - 132.9 x 93.4 x 83.9mm</p> <p><strong>Weight</strong> - 560g (body only)</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Very pretty pictures </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>As mentioned above, the GH4&rsquo;s ability to shoot relatively noise-free at high ISO is a huge boost to its low light chops, and in all other ways it&rsquo;s a hugely capable stills camera.</p> <p><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="480" mozallowfullscreen="" msallowfullscreen="" oallowfullscreen="" src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/99712217@N05/14349446061/in/set-72157644614849220/player/" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="640"></iframe></p> <p>We can&rsquo;t say we&#39;re quite as taken with its all-round picture quality in the same way as we were with the similarly-priced <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-a7r/review" target="_blank">Sony A7R</a> (the Sony&rsquo;s full-frame sensor makes a big difference, we feel), and it doesn&rsquo;t autofocus quite as quickly either, but on the whole its sharpness, noise control, speed and colour reproduction are all in the upper echelons of what we&rsquo;ve seen from mirrorless cameras. That last idea is definitely getting passed on to the money men at Stuff Towers.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/netflix/25-best-things-watch-netflix-right-now/feature" target="_blank">The 25 Best Things to Watch on Netflix right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="We&#039;re home" alt="Netflix HQ" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Netflix-HQ-12.jpg?1399825598" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="This is the board that tracks the progress of (sadly codenamed) new features" alt="Netflix HQ" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Netflix-HQ-10.jpg?1399825598" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="You knew there was going to be a massive cinema room somewhere" alt="Netflix HQ" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Netflix-HQ-14.jpg?1399825598" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/netflix/netflix-time-broadcasters-are-doing-4k-we-ll-be-next-thing/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/netflix/netflix-time-broadcasters-are-doing-4k-we-ll-be-next-thing/news#comments 4K Netflix Streaming Thu, 08 May 2014 20:53:04 +0000 Tom Parsons 1436779 at http://www.stuff.tv Bang & Olufsen BeoVision Avant 4K TV follows you around the room http://www.stuff.tv/bo/bang-olufsen-beovision-avant-4k-tv-follows-you-around-room/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Stuff goes eyes-on with B&amp;O&#039;s latest wonder telly and its amazing swivelling stand </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The BeoVision Avant and its swivelling stand" alt="Bang &amp; Olufsen BeoVision Avant" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/bang-and-olufsen-beovision-avant-01.jpg?1399702238" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/stephen-graves" title="View user profile.">Stephen Graves</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>So, Bang &amp; Olufsen&#39;s finally made a 4K TV.</strong><br />Yes, and not just any 4K TV &ndash; as you&#39;d expect from the Danish company, the BeoVision Avant is packed with tech and rather beautiful to behold. It has some unique features, too &ndash; and Stuff ventured out to <a href="http://www.bang-olufsen.com/en" target="_blank">B&amp;O</a> headquarters in Struer to see them up close and personal.</p> <p><strong>Was it worth the trip? </strong><br />Oh yes. The BeoVision Avant is quite a sight &ndash; a sleek aluminium and glass affair with a 55in 4K screen. It&#39;s quite chunky &ndash; at 9.64cm deep, it&#39;s no slimline flatscreen &ndash; but a clever layered design creates a depth-masking illusion. Around the back, two sliding aluminium panels conceal the ports &ndash; and there are no visible screws to be found anywhere on the TV set. It&#39;s all done in the name of &quot;360-degree design&quot; &ndash; ensuring that the back of the set is as nice to look at as the front.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Why&#39;s that, then? Surely the screen is the bit I&#39;ll be watching. </strong><br />There&#39;s every chance that you&#39;ll be admiring the back of the Avant, thanks to its impressive party piece. Switch the set on, and it swivels to face one of three preset positions in the room on its motorised stand.</p> <p>There are three different stands, in fact &ndash; the most impressive is the floor stand, which features a rotating base and column. That means that the Avant can be tucked up against the wall, but will move out from the wall to face your chosen seating position; obviously, if you&#39;re in the market for one of these TVs, you have a massive lounge with a dining table in one corner and sofas in the other.</p> <p>The other stands are more simple; there&#39;s a hinged wall mount, and a table mount that lifts the set up from an angled resting position to vertical.</p> <p><strong>Sounds like quite a performance.&nbsp;</strong><br />It certainly is; switch the set on, and &quot;electronic curtains&quot; will part, revealing the screen &ndash; a standard feature on Bang &amp; Olufsen sets. New to the BeoVision Avant is the speaker array that drops down from the bottom of the screen, sliding apart to reveal the three-speaker setup. </p> <p>This being B&amp;O, no detail has been left to chance &ndash; the startup procedure has been timed so that the stand, the speaker array and the electronic curtains move at the same rate, completing their motion at the same time.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper brightcove-player-wrapper"> <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript" src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/BrightcoveExperiences.js"></script> <script src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/APIModules_all.js"></script> <div class="brightcove-player"> <object id="myExperience-3547297994001" class="BrightcoveExperience"> <param name="bgcolor" value="#000000" /> <param name="playerID" value="" /> <param name="playerKey" value="AQ~~,AAAAEgPmGlk~,Fzd-TvXcznw-P3piHaryQBMeIzWITldz" /> <param name="isVid" value="true" /> <param name="isUI" value="true" /> <param name="dynamicStreaming" value="true" /> <param name="@videoPlayer" value="3547297994001" /> <param name="autoStart" value="" /> <param name="htmlFallback" value="true" /> <param name="includeAPI" value="true" /> <param name="templateLoadHandler" value="brightcoveTemplateLoaded" /> <param name="width" value="640px" /> <param name="height" value="360px" /> </object> <!-- This script tag will cause the Brightcove Players defined above it to be created as soon as the line is read by the browser. But what about the specs? </strong><br />The Avant sports a 55in, 3840x2160 pixel LED panel, with local backlight dimming for clearer blacks and an anti-reflective glass screen. The screen on each set is calibrated using a 10-point factory measurement procedure, so if you don&#39;t like the screen on one set, you can fairly guarantee that you won&#39;t like any Avant &ndash; because they&#39;re all outputting the same picture.</p> <p>B&amp;O&#39;s also kitted out the Avant with Chromatic Room Adaptation. A dual light sensor unit on the top right of the set measures the light levels and colour tone of the ambient light, adjusting the white point of the picture to suit. So if the light in your room&#39;s reddish, it&#39;ll slowly dial up the red to keep the perceived colour on the screen neutral.</p> <p><strong>Sounds good.</strong><br />So does the Avant. That little speaker array packs in three 2in midrange speakers for left, right and centre channels. That means that dialogue can be fed through the centre channel, where the faces appear on screen &ndash; just like a cinema speaker system. There&#39;s also a 4in forward-facing woofer and a rear-facing 6.5in woofer, powered by a 60w class D amplifier. Depending on whether the TV&#39;s mounted on a wall or facing out into the room, the TV will adjust the bass to optimise performance and minimise distortion.</p> <p>If that isn&#39;t enough noise for you, there are 21 output channels (eight wireless, ten wired, and the TV&#39;s own three channels). You can connect a 7.1 surround sound system wirelessly; if you&#39;re using B&amp;O&#39;s own speakers, it&#39;ll recognise the model and adjust sensitivity, latency and bass sensitivity accordingly. And you can create up to 9 speaker groups, to suit your different viewing positions.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="If you&#039;re boring, you can choose the cabinet stand." alt="Bang &amp; Olufsen BeoVision Avant" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/bang-and-olufsen-beovision-avant-04_0.jpg?1399702238" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The Avant&#039;s speaker array." alt="Bang &amp; Olufsen BeoVision Avant" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/bang-and-olufsen-beovision-avant-03_0.jpg?1399702238" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Does your sitting room look like this? It&#39;s designed for ease of use; common functions are placed for your thumb, while TV and Music buttons cycle through an array of presets. Want to fire up a movie, YouTube or Spotify? Just cycle through the TV or Music menu and it&#39;ll load up all your presets and launch.</p> <p><strong>Ah yes, apps. Is it a smart TV?</strong><br />Nope &ndash; rather than faffing about with proprietary smart TV software, B&amp;O has delegated; there&#39;s a space in the back that&#39;ll accommodate an Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV or Roku box &ndash; there&#39;s also a slot for an external HDD. It&#39;s a clever move, meaning that you&#39;ll be able to update the set indefinitely by just plugging in the latest smart TV box. Yes, it means shelling out an extra &pound;50-&pound;100 for smart TV capability, but let&#39;s be honest: if you&#39;re in the market for a Bang &amp; Olufsen TV, that&#39;s not going to make a dent in your bank account.</p> <p><strong>Yeah, about that &ndash; how much does it cost?</strong><br />Surprisingly little for a Bang &amp; Olufsen 4K TV, actually. You can pick one up in B&amp;O shops now for &pound;5995, though you&#39;ll have to pay extra for the stands. The motorised stands add an extra&nbsp;&pound;1195 to the price, while a static stand can be had for &pound;600.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/hot-stuff" target="_blank">More awesome Hot Stuff</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The BeoRemote 1 is also an effective melee weapon" alt="Bang &amp; Olufsen BeoRemote 1" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/bang-and-olufsen-beovision-avant-02.jpg?1399702238" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Hands-on with the Bang &amp; Olufsen BeoRemote 1" alt="Bang &amp; Olufsen BeoRemote 1" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/bang-and-olufsen-beovision-avant-hands-on-02.jpg?1399702238" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="If your decorations are chintzy, the TV actually makes a crying noise when you turn it on." alt="Bang &amp; Olufsen BeoVision Avant" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/bang-and-olufsen-beovision-avant-07_0.jpg?1399702238" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="The Bang &amp; Olufsen BeoVision Avant, just hangin&#039;" alt="Bang &amp; Olufsen BeoVision Avant" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/bang-and-olufsen-beovision-avant-08.jpg?1399702238" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><legend>Carousel Extras</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Give us a twirl </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-standfirst"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item standfirst:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> B&amp;O Avant 4K TV follows you around the room </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/bo/bang-olufsen-beovision-avant-4k-tv-follows-you-around-room/news#comments 4K B&O BeoVision Avant Hot Stuff TVs Thu, 08 May 2014 12:28:56 +0000 Stephen Graves 1436764 at http://www.stuff.tv Sony Bravia X9 series 4K TV http://www.stuff.tv/kd-55x9005b/sony-x9000b-4k-tv/review <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Everything you need to know about Sony&#039;s imminent flagship 4K TV series </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The 65in Sony KD-65X9005B 4K TV" alt="Sony KD-65X9005B 4K TV" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/Sony-X9000B-4K-TV.jpg?1399479144" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/tom-parsons" title="View user profile.">Tom Parsons</a> </div> </div> </div> <p>If 2013 was the year that 4K took its first tentative steps into the TV arena, 2014 is the year it bursts from a cake with tassels on its nipples and a full song and dance routine.</p> <p>That&#39;s thanks to standards being finalised, formats being settled upon and service providers (most notably Netflix) committing to recording and broadcasting in Ultra High Definition 4K. Having heard both old and new models side-by-side, we can confirm the 2014 set sounds significantly bigger and weightier.</p> <p>If it&#39;s still not bassy enough for you there&#39;s an optional wireless subwoofer available, which in combination with the X9B&#39;s ClearAudio+ virtual surround sound should amount to quite the cinematic experience.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/tvs/top-ten" target="_blank">The 10 Best TVs in the World right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The thicker bottom means more room for better speakers" alt="Sony KD-65X9005B 4K TV" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/kd-65x9005b_4K-TV-2.jpg?1399479144" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Tech: the best of Sony </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>As a flagship 4K TV series it&#39;s little wonder that the X9B series is packed with the very best technology Sony currently has to offer.</p> <p>First up is X-tended Dynamic Range (XDR for short), which is designed to not only give you super-bright whites and absolute blacks, but also handle every small gradation in-between. Having briefly seen it in action we think Sony might be on to something. Every single percentage change in light was reflected on the Sony: even the difference between 1% brightness and absolute black was visible, whereas the rival sets we saw were pitch black from around 7% down. It makes for a more natural picture, and one in which you can still see all the detail at the extremes of the spectrum.</p> <p>Then there&#39;s the Triluminous Display, designed to produce a wider and more vibrant colour palette. Again, having seen this briefly in action we can definitely say it achieves that goal, but to our eyes a couple of colours - particularly red - looked just a little too bright and too vivid. There should be settings to tweak Triluminous onboard, though, so we&#39;re not too worried about that being a problem when we come to our review.</p> <p>Finally there&#39;s the 4K X-Reality Pro engine controlling everything behind the scenes. This new version of Sony&#39;s picture-processing tech analyses the image and compares it to an internal database to enhance individual elements of the picture. For example, it will recognise an explosion and boost brightness and colours in that area to give it maximum impact. This even works with games, and according to the engineers doesn&#39;t create any lag.</p> <p>The 4K X-Reality Pro engine also handles upscaling of lower resolution sources, and you&#39;re still going to be watching those for a while yet. The idea is that while a 1080p Blu-ray might not look quite as good as 4K on the X9B range, it should look better than it does on any standard full HD TV. A brief play of the <em>Elysium</em> Blu-ray certainly went some way to convincing us.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/ces-2014/eyes-sonys-amazing-4k-short-throw-projector/news" target="_blank">Eyes-on with Sony&#39;s amazing Ultra Short-Throw Projector</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Triluminous Display provides a wider, more vibrant colour palette" alt="Sony KD-65X9005B 4K TV" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Sony-X9000B-4K-TV-2.jpg?1399479144" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Smarter than the average telly </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Sony&rsquo;s overhauled its UI for these new TVs, and it seems the XrossMediaBar is finally gone. Now you get One Flick Entertainment, which is designed to work hand-in-hand with the bundled One-Flick Remote.</p> <p>As you might imagine from the name, a single flick upwards on the remote&#39;s touch sensor brings in a pop-up menu of features and content, all of which are overlaid on the bottom of whatever you&rsquo;re watching. Swiping left and right allows you to choose the content you want, and the Sony even brings in listings from Sky and can control your box if you&rsquo;ve got one connected. It&rsquo;s all very seamless and pretty quick, judging by what we&rsquo;ve seen so far.</p> <p>Clearly Netflix is going to be popular with 4K TV buyers, seeing as it&rsquo;s already enabled some 4K streams. The Sony is perfectly able to access these thanks to full support for the HEVC codec.&nbsp;Got one of last year&#39;s 4K Sonys? You&rsquo;re going to need to add the &pound;350 FMP-X5 to get HEVC support. Well, you did know early adoption was risky, didn&#39;t you?</p> <p>Social Viewing is another interesting new feature of the X9B series. The first part of it is the Twitter integration &ndash; activate it while watching a sporting event, for example, and the TV will scroll any tweets that contain the automatically selected keywords. Want to change those keywords? Just write your own into the feature&rsquo;s menus. Speaking personally, the opportunity to have <a href="https://twitter.com/sniffpetrol" target="_blank">Sniff Petrol</a>&#39;s ramblings scrolling across the bottom of the screen while watching F1 is one not to be missed.</p> <p>The other side of Social Viewing is Skype, but we&rsquo;re a bit more dubious about this. Being able to Skype directly from your TV is great (and enabled via an almost-invisible camera built into the top-left bezel of the X9B range), but doing so in a window while watching a football game or similar? Not so much. Sony says it&rsquo;s trying to recreate the feeling of watching the game with your friends, but who spends the game actually looking at their mates?</p> <p>Talking of Skype, though, the camera here has facial recognition and tracks you if you move around the room - although in our brief demo that seemed a little less reliable than the similar tech used in <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/microsoft-xbox-one/review" target="_blank">Kinect on Xbox One</a>. We&rsquo;ll give you our definitive verdict once we&#39;ve tested it in full.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sky/project-ethan-revamp-will-transform-sky-s-set-top-box-service/news" target="_blank">Sky&#39;s supercharged Project Ethan box will support 4K, cloud recordings and more</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony&#039;s 4K TV adverts - unsurprisingly filmed in 4K" alt="Sony KD-65X9005B 4K TV" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Sony-4K-Vulcano.jpg?1399479144" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The Skype camera is almost invisible in the bezel" alt="Sony KD-65X9005B 4K TV" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Sony-X9000B-4K-TV-3.jpg?1399479144" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sizes, prices and release dates </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The X9B series is available in three sizes: 55in (KD-55X9005B), 65in (KD-65X9005B) and 79in (KD-79X9005B). Which isn&rsquo;t a great surprise, given Sky&rsquo;s history of embracing new technologies like HDTV and 3D TV, but (assuming it&rsquo;s true) reassuring to know: 4K can only succeed if there&rsquo;s lots of material out there to watch, after all.</p> <p>The Telegraph&rsquo;s sources say the Project Ethan revamp could be available to &ldquo;millions of customers as soon as two years from now&rdquo;. We think Sky needs get a move on, because two years is a long time in tech &ndash; and Amazon, Netflix, Apple and other video providers won&rsquo;t be sitting still either.</p> <p>[Via <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/mediatechnologyandtelecoms/media/10789883/BSkyB-plans-major-overhaul-of-set-top-box-to-meet-Apple-threat.html">The Telegraph</a>]</p> <p><strong>Update 29/04/13:</strong> Back in March we caught up with Luke Bradley-Jones, Brand Director of TV Products at Sky, to talk about the future of the service. Here&#39;s what he had to say about 4K broadcasting and the differences between internet streaming and satellite broadcasting.</p> <p><strong>On 4K:</strong><br />&quot;We look at it all the time. We keep a very close eye on what&#39;s happening, and we&#39;ve run some trials in terms of shooting in 4K.</p> <p>&quot;I think what we&#39;ve learned and executed very well against for both HD and 3D is making sure that we&#39;re striking the right balance between helping to create demand and getting our customers excited about new technologies, but not trying to force feed something that they&#39;re not interested in. We&#39;ve got over half our base watching in HD now. We&#39;ve got a 3D base which is growing solidly but hasn&#39;t followed the same rate of adoption as HD &ndash; I don&#39;t think we ever thought it would.</p> <p>&quot; So we&#39;ll keep watching 4K. It&#39;s in our DNA to make sure we offer the best viewing experience, especially for the big screen, which is where the majority of our customers spend the majority of their time watching telly. We haven&#39;t announced anything because we don&#39;t have a specific plan to announce. But we&#39;re testing the technology, watching the device prices and watching the take-up.&quot;</p> <p><strong>Will 4K be streamed over the internet or broadcast via satellite?</strong><br />&quot;We&#39;ve just run through a top-to-bottom assessment of what it would take from a broadcast operations point of view to deliver 4k and it would take an investment but it&#39;s something that&#39;s absolutely doable from both a downstream bandwidth and cost point of view. We invest pretty substantially in our broadcast platform every year, the vast majority of our content and viewing continues to be delivered via satellite.</p> <p>&quot; The economics of OTT [internet-streaming] delivery for bandwidth-hungry services is improving but it really depends on the scale. If it&#39;s on a smaller scale we might look at OTT but if we&#39;re taking it to market we&#39;d probably want to take it to scale, which is what we&#39;re good at, so DTH [satellite] would definitely be part of that.&quot;</p> <p><strong>But won&#39;t streaming replace tradition satellite broadcasts soon?</strong><br />&quot;I&#39;m not saying that&#39;s never going to happen but I think it&#39;s a long way off. If you look at the volume of simultaneous viewers we&#39;re supporting in one go in HD for live content, the economics for that via satellite versus OTT are still in favour of the satellite. It&#39;s much more efficient.</p> <p>&quot;Even for on-demand content, some of our most popular movies and TV shows are pushed to the box via the satellite rather than over the internet. Even though they&#39;re being watched on demand the customer generally doesn&#39;t know how it&#39;s being delivered. Anywhere between 40 and 60 percent of movies watched on-demand every week are pushed to the box via satellite. That means automatic viewing rather than having to wait for a download and it&#39;s also very efficient.</p> <p>&quot;Although we&#39;ve got major broadband operators it still costs more than satellite downlink, which is essentially zero incremental cost for the bandwidth we have. Samsung&rsquo;s smartphone-with-built-in-projector was introduced back in 2012, and attracted a fair bit of attention until people realised that squeezing a pico projector into a phone was massively gimmicky.</p> <p>And now, a couple of years on, Samsung has gone back to the well a second time, launching the Galaxy Beam 2. Like its predecessor, there&rsquo;s a projector built into the top edge able to throw an image onto a nearby surface. Said image isn&rsquo;t HD (it&rsquo;s WVGA) and won&rsquo;t be especially bright, either &ndash; so don&rsquo;t expect home cinema quality. It&rsquo;s more for sharing the odd picture or video.</p> <p>Aside from that, there&rsquo;s Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, an 800 x 480 screen, 1.2GHz quad-core CPU, 5MP camera and microSD slot. A distinctly average setup, in other words &ndash; but currently the Beam 2 seems destined only for the Chinese market, where there are literally millions of people in the market for mid-range Android phones.</p> <p><strong>[Source: <a href="http://www.androidcentral.com/projector-toting-samsung-galaxy-beam-2-headed-china-mobile">Android Central</a>]</strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy Beam 2: a second-gen projector-smartphone" alt="Samsung Galaxy Beam 2: a second-gen projector-smartphone" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-beam-2.jpg?1398491017" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> 4K Apple Laptops Samsung Smartphones Sony Thu, 24 Apr 2014 16:16:54 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1436105 at http://www.stuff.tv New screen tech paves the way for 10in 4K tablets http://www.stuff.tv/new-screen-tech-paves-way-10in-4k-tablets/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Japan Display claims its 3840 x 2160 LCD won’t empty batteries any quicker than “normal” HD screens </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Japan Display&#039;s new 10.1in 3840 x 2160 display" alt="Japan Display&#039;s new 10.1in 3840 x 2160 display" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/japan-display-4k-screen.jpg?1398399343" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>If you&rsquo;re hoping to see a 4K 10in tablet soon, you should be very excited about Japan Display&rsquo;s new screen technology.</p> <p>The company has announced a new 10.1in screen with a 3840 x 2160 resolution which it claims does not drain battery life any faster than a regular, non-4K display.
