For the truly determined, there’s one each of component, composite and SCART, but hopefully your beyond those ancient connections by now, aren’t you?

Then we get to the One Connect port. No, it’s not an input for teenage boy bands – it’s for plugging in an extra module for future upgrades. That means the TV won’t get too dated too soon. To the right you’ll find Samsung’s own video-on-demand service, as well as a ‘multimedia’ page for your own content (say, via USB) and popular internet content (read: cat videos).

Right in the middle is the On TV page. Here you’ll find live TV as well as thumbnails of programmes on other channels. There’s a content recommendation service based on what you like. The more you watch, the more accurate the service is. It’s only mildly creepy.

The new stuff for this year is minimal: when you press the ‘Smart Hub’ button, two bars appear on the screen as an overlay, without interrupting your current programme. One of these leads you to the smart hub; the other is a list of recent activity. That means you no longer have to scroll through BBC parliament and porn to get to your favourite channels at the far ends of the programming wasteland. Just use the shortcut to flick between your most-used choices.

READ MORE: Netflix: by the time broadcasters are doing 4K, we'll be on to the next thing

Image #1:

Image #2:

<img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1400" height="900" title="The TV will recommend programs to suit your specific taste. Across all resolutions you get properly dark black levels, good motion handling and crisp, clean whites.

In the past Samsung had issues with colours. They tended to be punchy, but just a little bit unnatural. This time it’s a more mature, subtle approach that doesn’t feel like you’re stuck in shop demonstration mode. Which is actually the preferred way of watching Bake Off because it lets you pause and rewind the exciting bits. But what you won’t hear is Mary Berry complaining that the side of one of the cakes looks curved when it should be straight. Because while Sony’s new S90 is its first in the UK with a curved screen, it is less prominently curved than other TVs of its ouvre and so straight line distortion is minimised.

But how would Mary know… oh, never mind. So curved TVs are bad, is that the story now?

Uh-oh, soggy bottom – your conclusion is under-baked! The advantage of a curved TV – the way it delivers light to the curved surface of your peepers – is all present and correct. But the S90 is the result of some hefty research into where the sweet curve radius lies. Between 5000mm and 11000mm, says Sony. The picture is super sharp, and it’s easy to pick out all the little details. If you’ve ever felt the need to scrutinise every line on Kevin Spacey’s face, here’s your chance.

The picture isn’t very subtle, however. They’re very punchy, and in a showroom environment would have no problem grabbing your attention, but you miss the super-realistic nuance and gentle gradation that you get from a truly stunning TV set. The LG also struggles a bit with contrast, and blacks are rarely properly dark.

When it comes to upscaling 1080p, the LG does a good job. The picture is as sharp and clean as on a good HD TV, and there’s little in the way of noise. Motion could be a little more stable, but that can be fine-tuned in the settings.

READ MORE: Here's why 4K TV is set to conquer your living room

Box Out Title:

LG 55UB950V Tech Specs

Box Out Body Text:

Screen size: 55in (also available in 65in)

Resolution: 3840 x 2160

Display technology: LCD with LED backlight

Speaker output: 35W

Connectivity: Freeview, HDMI 2.0 (x4), USB (x3), Component, Composite, Scart, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Headphone, Optical output

Dimensions (hwd): 776 x 1232 x 242mm with stand, 734 x 1232 x 60mm without stand

Weight: 24.2kg with stand, 23.1kg without stand

Make full width:

Make full width

</fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3">

Paginate on this section:

Don't paginate

Title:

WebOS, the ingenious interface

Body:

It wasn’t long ago that smart TV interfaces were unmitigated rubbish. It’s got no specific ‘hub’ to visit. Everything is laid out in the Launcher, a pop-up bar that comes and goes without interrupting your current programme. The idea is to introduce all manner of multitasking, so you can jump between YouTube, Netflix, a specific IT program and your games console as easily as flicking from BBC One to BBC Two on a standard TV.

The system is laid out chronologically. A big window in the centre is your current choice. Go left to see recently view channels and apps. Go right to flick through all the other apps you’ve downloaded, which you can rearrange as you please. Operation is super-slick, with no significant lag at all. Back in London, Sony was far more helpful. They showed it at 3840x2160, which I discovered is enough to see Raphael Varane’s nipples through his shirt during the national anthems, if that’s your sort of thing. Like football in 3D, it’s less noticeable on the wide shots from the top of the stands, although you could practically pick out individual faces in the crowd on the far side. The idea is that you simply tap your NFC-enabled phone on the side of the GH4 and it’ll swiftly establish a Wi-Fi connection, allowing you to control the camera functions through Panasonic’s Image App. After ten minutes of trying this to no avail, we gave up – the connection started, but always stalled halfway. Sadly, this is typical of Wi-Fi equipped cameras at the moment – the end result isn’t worth the fuss and frustration. Other connection options include QR code and manual.

Also, as a possible consequence of the sheer amount of power needed to handle 4K video recording, the GH4 has one of the beefiest image processors of any camera around. Called the Venus Engine, it features a quad-core CPU that, as well as allowing 4K, makes vast improvements to noise reduction and picture quality.
