They&#39;re arranged so that the top and bottom of the lamp emit more light, and glare from the side is kept to a minimum.</p> <p>The structure is initially reminiscent of an insect&#39;s compound eye, though the inspiration behind the design was something quite different. &quot; It looks like an insect&#39;s eye,&quot; says Wertel, &quot;but actually the starting point for this structure is Buckminster Fuller, the geodesic dome; and then we subdivided it to arrive at this structure. And we like to experiment, so this is more of an experimental design.&quot; he notes. Some aspects of the design are also informed by the limitations of the manufacturing process. &quot; We have an understructure,&quot; Wertel says, &quot;and because of cost it&#39;s actually split in two parts, so you can stack them in the machine. And to hide the split line, we created an outer structure.&quot;</p> <p>&quot;Even the surface structure that we added was there to hide any mistakes that the printer makes,&quot; he adds; otherwise, the rough texture of the laser-sintered polyamide wouldn&#39;t sit right next to the smooth, sculpted designs of the Hue range.</p> <p>Those limitations will eventually be overcome, though; and the elaborate designs of 3D printed products will give way to more everyday products. &quot;I just repaired my Bugaboo by printing a part, so this is like a sensible use of the technology which is growing and growing,&quot; Wertel says. &quot;It&#39;s really like the boundaries between consumer and producer are becoming blurred.&quot;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Philips Hue Entity luminaire" alt="Philips Hue Entity luminaire" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/philips-hue-03.jpg?1413283358" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Philips Hue Entity luminaire" alt="Philips Hue Entity luminaire" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/philips-hue-04.jpg?1413283358" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Philips Hue Entity luminaire" alt="Philips Hue Entity luminaire" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/philips-hue-05.jpg?1413283358" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Before that happens, though, more well-known brands are incorporating 3D printing into their products. Why would you want to pipe out pureed food when you could slice a carrot, you wonder? The idea isn&#39;t to print out a salad or a stew; instead, Kucsma envisages the Foodini printing out fresh versions of the processed, packaged foods that we keep in our cupboards today.</p> <p>&quot;Look at the pre-packaged foods and the pre-made foods you eat. A lot of them have additives and preservatives to make these foods last for months or years; that&#39;s not natural, that&#39;s not eating healthy,&quot; she says. &quot; We don&#39;t know what we&#39;re eating, and when we do know what we&#39;re eating, we don&#39;t know exactly how much of it we&#39;re eating. We&#39;re eating way more salt, oil and sugar that we would if we made these foods at home.&quot;</p> <p>The Foodini lets you print those pre-made foods that you don&#39;t have time to put together yourself. Foodini stores its ingredients in five individually-heated food capsules; you control it using an Android-powered touchscreen interface. Here it is: Assassin&rsquo;s Creed Unity, the first entry in the open-world action series to release solely for new-gen consoles and PC, is being developed by 10 different studios at Ubisoft. Its Montreal home base is leading the charge, as it has for all core series entries, but it&rsquo;s being flanked this time by the Annecy, Bucharest, Chengdu, Kiev, Montpellier, Quebec, Shanghai, Singapore, and Toronto studios.</p> <p>Last year&rsquo;s Assassin&rsquo;s Creed IV: Black Flag featured work from nine studios, and it&rsquo;s how Ubisoft has been able to continue pumping out an open-world game with a completely new setting each and every fall. And that philosophy is spreading to the publisher&rsquo;s other games, as we found out yesterday that Far Cry 4 will <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/ubisoft/far-cry-4-scales-himalayas-and-drops-november/news">feature the work</a> of five different studios. But when these games ultimately sell several million copies apiece, we imagine the mass headcount and logistical headaches will all be worth it.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.polygon.com/2014/5/15/5721832/assassins-creed-unity-developers-10-ubisoft-studios">Polygon</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/detaiuls-next-assassins-creed-game-have-leaked-and-its-called-unity/news">Details of the next Assassin&#39;s Creed game have leaked, and it&#39;s called Unity</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Assassin&#039;s Creed Unity" alt="Assassin&#039;s Creed Unity" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/assassinscreedunity.jpg?1400237625" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/sony/fully-charged-sony-s-4k-alpha-7s-camera-out-july-npower-s-nest-thermostat-initiative-and-3d-pri#comments 3D Printing Cameras Console games Sony Ubisoft Fri, 16 May 2014 06:30:00 +0000 Andrew Hayward 1437310 at http://www.stuff.tv Be a fashion rebel and print your own makeup with Mink http://www.stuff.tv/be-fashion-rebel-3d-print-your-own-makeup/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The Mink printer can produce makeup in any shade without killing your bank account.
