Nikon 1 V1 and Nikon 1 J1 mirrorless cameras snap into action

It's not every day Nikon builds a new camera from scratch. But it is worth waiting for

Nikon has lifted the curtains off a brand new camera system – the Nikon 1 – with the launch of two new mirrorless snappers, the J1 and V1. Both cameras have a 10.1MP CMOS sensor as well as full HD video capture and will be compatible with the brand new 1-mount interchangeable lens system’s range of NIKKOR lenses.

But the real story is the supercharged image processor, which gives rise to new photographic possibilities. Motion Snapshot gives users the ability to simultaneously record a slow-motion movie and a still image before combining the two to deliver a ‘moving photo’, while a Smart Photo Selector sees 20 hi-res images being recorded at high speed, before automatically filtering out the best choice for you.

Both models are cased in light-weight aluminium bodies, with five colour options available for the J1 or simple black or white options for the V1. In addition, the J1 comes packing a built-in flash (in contrast to the V1’s external flash support), while the V1 features a mechanical shutter, stereo microphone and a multi-accessory port.

Prices for the V1 will range from £830 to £980 whereas the J1 will set you back from £550 all the way up to £750. Both models will go on sale on the 20th of October – just about enough time to prospect your couch cushions for some extra cash.
